Educators will explore ways to use data in an engineering experience. They will engineer an activity to allow students to determine criteria and constraints, design, collect and analyze data, and test one possible solution.
The following video highlights how Birmingham Covington School integrates process skills in design thinking. As a public school, Birmingham Covington has a mandated curriculum and standards that need to be delivered; however, teachers also work to help students develop skills that will prepare them for the future (such as critical thinking, working in teams, etc).
Prior to watching the video, brainstorm a few questions you have about continuing your journey in Engineering Design that might be answered based on the description of the video above.
After the video, reflect on the following:
What answers did you find for the questions you came up with before the video?
Identify data collection and data analysis as it shows up in the video and how it might show up in engineering design.
What steps of the Engineering Design process are evident in the video?
How are those similar or different from the DTI process we are using?
