Only compulsory categories of electives. These categories are artistic and practical (taide ja taito).
No. You must carefully choose electives, as you will need to commit to long electives for 8th and 9th grades. You will choose an additional "artistic and practical" subject short elective prior to grade 9.
The registration details will be sent as a Wilma message to all 7th grade guardians and students, including the dates the registration opens and closes. A Wilma message with the registration link will only be sent to the guardians, as they must be involved in selecting the subjects with their child. All registrations received by the due date will be considered equally. If an elective is over-subscribed, a random draw will be completed to choose participants.
Long electives are two hours per week and continue through both 8th and 9th grades. Short electives are either half of a year (2 hours per week) or one whole year (1 hour per week).
You will receive a numeric grade for long electives, and language electives may be counted toward a student's theoretical subject grade point average (for use when applying to high schools or vocational schools). The grade you receive at the end of your 8th and 9th grade "artistic and practical" subject elective can be used to improve the grade you received in the same subject in 7th grade.
A short elective receives an evaluation statement, but not a numeric grade. Your teacher will choose from statements such as: "You have achieved the objectives partially," "quite well," "well," or "very well." You are required to pass all subjects in order to graduate from middle school.
While you ultimately only need one elective per category, you will be asked to choose a number of back-up electives for each category, as well (in case your first choice for any given category is not realized due to lack of interest, or if an elective is over-subscribed and you do not get chosen by the random draw).
Those who do not indicate their elective preferences by the due date may be placed in electives of the guidance counselor's choosing!
