PRINCIPAL REPORT
It's been another busy fortnight at Wattle View Primary School with enrolment offers being mailed to out of zone students for Foundation 2024. If you are an existing member of the Wattle View Community who has a child starting in Foundation next year, please ensure that you enrol them as soon as possible. Thank you to those who have already been in to see Jo and completed the forms. Another way that you can help is by spreading the word about our fantastic school. Chat to friends and family about all of the wonderful things happening at Wattle View and encourage them to come for a tour and put their name down. We are still taking enrolments and our first Foundation transition session is in less than a month's time.
As we come to the end of Week 4, we have noticed that school absence rates are starting to rise. We understand that the weather this time of year brings about coughs, colds and illness. Of course, if your child is unwell, we do not expect you to send them to school. However, as we say to our students regularly, it is so important that they come to school every day so that they can continue to build momentum with their learning and development. We know it is hard to get kids up in the morning, particularly in the cold of Winter, but we are finding more and more students signing in 10 and 15 minutes late at the office each day. Compounded over a week, term and year, this is a lot of time missed in the classroom. If your child has a morning appointment or you know that your child will be absent for the day, please log this information on Compass. For ongoing absences, phone calls will be placed to parents and letters sent where necessary. If you are struggling to get your child to school or would like to chat about attendance, please get in touch with Tracy or myself.
Book Week kicks off in Week 7 (starting August 21st) with a number of events and activities set to take place. The theme this year is 'Read, Grow, Inspire'. In addition to the usual Book Week Parade, where students are encouraged to dress as a favourite book character of theirs, students will also be participating in junior or senior illustrator incursions. There will be daily book reading by students and classrooms will be transformed into the theme of a shortlisted book. This year, we have also introduced a Book Swap, where you can bring in some pre-loved books and swap them for new ones to read. See the flyer at the bottom of this page for more information. We know that many of you get really into dressing up and we are looking forward to seeing all of the creative costumes again this year. If you have any questions regarding Book Week, please ask your child's teacher or contact us in the office.
As some of you may be aware, Wattle View Primary School have partnered with The Fathering Project, an evidence-based organisation that aims to promote positive fathering behaviours and fathers’ engagement with their infants, preschool, primary school and adolescent-aged children. Events will be held throughout the rest of the year to help engage fathers in discussion and provide opportunities to complete activities with their child/ren. If you'd like to be part of the Fathering Project at Wattle View, there is QR code that you can scan at the bottom of this newsletter. Alternatively, there is one up in the office that you can also use to sign up and access the portal. Event information will be sent out closer to the dates, but we look forward to a healthy uptake. Communication came out this week with tips to explain bullying behaviours to your child:
1. Listen: Believe your child because it is important that they feel confident to talk to you about their problems.
2. Remind them that bullying is wrong: No child should hurt another, with their words or actions. Remind them that they have the right to feel safe and happy.
3. If there is an issue at school that you feel requires further discussion, make an appointment for both of you to unpack the problem. Develop a plan to address the bullying, in consultation with the school and your child.
Stay tuned for more from The Fathering Project.
With many events coming up (see calendar above), please stay abreast of Compass posts and emails. A friendly reminder that Friday 11th August is a Curriculum Day (pupil free). Staff are looking forward to working on Reading and the Wattle View Instructional Model. We will also be launching our new Wattle View Primary School Facebook Page (Noticeboard) very soon, so stay tuned for the link. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email, call or pop in for a chat.
Kind Regards,
Andrew Reardon
Assistant Principal
FOUNDATION
It's been a jam-packed fortnight in Foundation. Here's a bit about what we have been doing ...
LITERACY
Most mornings, students have been coming into class and reading with their Reading Buddy, this helps them to build their fluency and confidence. Every Monday we have been adding to our recount book, we are having a big focus on finger spaces and full stops at the moment.
Students have been continuing to learn about non-fiction texts, we have focused our learning on two animals - cheetahs and frogs. We have practised accurately colouring and labelling diagrams of animals, we have also learnt about the importance of headings and where headings should go. Check out some of the wonderful labelling below!
NUMERACY
Students have been building their confidence with addition, we have been investigating how whole numbers can be split into two different parts, for example 10 can be split into 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5. We have also been working through some worded problems, identifying the important information and how to turn that into an addition equation.
Students have also been practising days of the week and months of the year.
INQUIRY
In Respectful Relationships, students have been learning about how we can all do the same things and we need to learn when to be strong (if we're climbing a mountain) and when to be gentle (if we're holding a kitten).
Students have also been learning about living things - what makes something living and what living things need to survive.
REMINDERS
Readers and Homework books need to be brought to school every Monday so they can be updated.
There are a few permission forms to be returned - Illustrator visit, Swimming, Biological Science Incursion.
GRADE 1/2
It has been another busy fortnight in Grade 1/2! Here are some of the exciting things we have been doing:
LITERACY AND INQUIRY
In Literacy we have continued to focus on Procedural Writing and have been learning about the importance of including clear and appropriate verbs and adverbs in our steps. We have also had the opportunity to practise writing procedural texts and following the procedure to make a new product – we even got to make jelly and playdough which helped us to understand how we can mix products together to make something new. It's been great to see how Literacy and Inquiry can connect!
In Reading, we have been focusing on ‘making predictions’ about the books, Owl Babies and Chrysanthemum. We have been making predictions before we read the text, while we read the text, and then considered what could happen if the text continued.
Check out some of our playdough predictions below – we had to choose a character from the text and represent an emotion that they might feel. How creative!
NUMERACY
We have also been learning about the connection between multiplication and division and have been using lots of counters, teddy bears, and unifix to help us share into equal groups.
Over the past fortnight, we have also been learning about analogue clocks and learning to tell the time to the hour and half hour. We have even started to look at how to read a clock that shows quarter to and quarter past! Telling the time has been made a lot easier as we were also able to make our own clocks using card and paper plates.
GRADE 3/4
Its been another wonderful fortnight in 3/4 with lots of fun and learning happening!
In literacy we have finished up our unit on Procedural texts with students showing us what they have learnt through writing a procedure on how to make home made ice cream, an activity they completed in inquiry. We are now learning all about information reports. In reading we are looking at directly stated information and how we can interpret it and infer understandings from it. Students have been loving participating in their reading groups with each reading group focusing on a different book.
Numeracy has been lots of fun with chance and probability experiments to determine dependent and independent events. This has tied in well with our learning of fractions and decimals.
Our science unit has continued as we work on more in depth knowledge on materials, their specific names, uses, and how biodegrabale they are! We have an ongoing experiment happening where we have buried different materials in pots of soil to see which ones break down and therefor are more environmentally friendly.
Please don't forget to check students take home pouches as there has been lots of notices come home recently for swimming, footy lunch, book week etc.
As always if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to get into contact with your child's teacher.
GRADE 5/6
LITERACY
This week we have been focusing on the language and word choice used when writing Procedure Texts. We have learnt about prepositional phrases, noun groups, adverbial phrases and imperative verbs which are all important language techniques when giving clear and concise instructions. In Week 4, students wrote a procedure for how to make a disgusting sandwhich. We sincerely hope no families were subjected to a practical demonstration at home! During reading, students have been working on summarising when we read fiction and non fiction texts. We have been working with the text Peregrines In The City to sharpen our skills of inferring unfamiliar technical language using information such as images, reading on and contextual clues.
MATHS
We have begun our unit on Patterns and Algebra this past fortnight. Students have been working with different teachers on topics as varied as finding unknown quantities in number sentences, working logically through the order of operations and writing algebraic expressions accurately using pronumerals. In Applied Maths, we have been looking at perimeter and area and the relationship between the two. Through the lens of designing bumper car tracks, students worked from a given area and explored all the different sized rectangular tracks they could create.
INQUIRY
Our unit on electricity finisehd up this week and we have had an absolute blast! Students have a strong understanding of the language around electrical circuits being able to flow, having to be closed and containing different elements. Students put their skills to the test by designing a simple toy that contained an electrical circuit. Students were extremely creative and came up with designs such as clown's faces, dogs with wagging tails, bunnies with ears as well as some steady hand skill tester games. Each of the designs contained LEDs, lights, buzzers or motors to create moveable and engaging additions to their designs. This culminated with sharing our designs with our Foundation buddies, who were thoroughly entertained to see the creations their buddies had brought to life!
