FOUNDATION NEWS
What a busy fortnight it has been with a huge focus on the production and rehearsals. We hope you enjoyed the show on Thursday evening. We had many nervous, but excited Foundie students and I'm sure you'd agree that they did a fantastic job!
In Literacy, students have started to finish their Jolly Phonics student books in class. There has been a large emphasis placed on letter formation and legible handwriting, as we continue to use our sound knowledge when blending and practising our tricky words. We have been making text to self connections when reading as a class and have started to develop our skills when drawing on personal experiences to make predictions. Last week, we explored the different foods that we have in our lunchboxes and to tie in with our inquiry topic, discussed where our food comes from.
In Maths, we compared and ordered collections of items based on quantity and we also learnt about faces, edges and vertices (corners) when building our own 3D shapes. This week, we have been looking at equal sharing and also explored the concept of 'chance' using language such as, 'will happen', 'won't happen', 'might happen', 'certain' and 'impossible'.
For Inquiry, we finished our mini unit on where our food comes from and have started to look at where materials come from to make the clothes that we wear. This is all leading up to our excursion to Chesterfield Farm on Monday 7th November. If you have not returned your child's permission form yet, please do so at your earliest convenience. If you require another form, please see your child's teacher.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in contact with either of us.
Kind Regards,
Nat & Andrew
GRADE 1/2 NEWS
It's safe to say it's been a busy fortnight! Firstly, we are so proud of all the students for their hard work getting ready for the Production, it's so great to see their excitement building. We have managed to squeeze lots of learning in too, here's a bit about what we have been doing:
LITERACY
In Reading, students have been working on inferring and how to find and use clues in an image to help build their understanding. In Writing, students have revisited narratives, following the writing process they have been editing their work so that it is ready for publishing. We have also been learning about prefixes and suffixes and how they change root words.
NUMERACY
In Numeracy, we have finished up our exploration into fractions. Students learnt about sharing single items equally as well as collections equally. As mentioned previously, it's a great skill to practise at home. Students have also been learning about patterns, the students have had such a great time copying, continuing and creating their own patterns using colours, shapes and even musical instruments!
INQUIRY
Students have continued to look into waste management, particularly what items should be put into what bins. We have also started to move towards our new inquiry topic 'Food'. Students will be learning about healthy eating, food packaging and also where food comes from. This relates to our upcoming excursion to Rayner's Orchard.
Reminder: Rayner's Orchard Excursion forms are due back Friday November 4th. We cannot accept late forms.
GRADE 3/4 NEWS
Literacy:
We continue with our spelling and grammar concepts on a weekly basis. In Writing students produced a persuasive text and then edited their text to upscale its contents. Students also created an 8 page picture story book to help a younger person deal with a difficult situation, for example; being scared, getting lost or being bullied. Our Reading Comprehension for week 3 was finding important information in an online text and week 4 we have studied how to create literal questions from a text by finding important information. We also sorted fiction text features and non-fiction text features of a book and how knowing them can help us understand what we read.
Numeracy:
In weeks 3 and 4 students have been investigating…
· Patterns: Finding the rule to a counting pattern
· Algebra: Finding the value of an unknown quantity by using math machines.
· Capacity: How much a container can hold, usually liquid; Formal measurement is l = litres and ml = millilitres
Inquiry:
This term our inquiry unit is Civics & Citizenship. Students will be learning about the difference between rules and laws, and democracy.
Other:
Hats are required for term 4.
Buy your tickets for the production – ask your family, friends and neighbours too!

School Captains
Inquiry:
This term in Inquiry, we are still studying Economics. We are learning about trade-offs and how they affect the cost of goods and services. In our Economics unit, we will also learn about crucial things to understand, such as why we need to pay taxes, and why some goods cost as much as they do. I am very excited to learn more about this important topic that plays a huge role in every adult person’s life. I am very excited to learn more about money and its role in society this term.
Numeracy:
In Numeracy the past two weeks we have been focusing on Money and Financial Maths concepts. We learnt more about Australian coins and rounding to the nearest 5 cents. Grade 5/6 learnt more about percentages and how to work them out. Group 3 experienced life as an adult (nearly) in full, as they were part of a class community for the sessions. At the start of week four we had our post test, to see how much we have learnt over the last three weeks!
Literacy:
The past 2 weeks we have done poems, visualising and summarising. For poems, we have done a limerick poem and a shape poem, the limerick poems are a classic type of poems that most people like to write, the shape poem is a very unique poem which is more based on the art. For visualising we have had around 2-3 sessions on the tasks. We have had our teachers read us a poem about a place or thing. Us students have to draw or write down what we are thinking in our minds, after that we all have to walk around the class to see what our classmates have drawn. That's what we have learned in literacy these past couple weeks!
Homework:
So the past week in homework we’ve been doing the usual. Our daily reading, our spelling words for our Jolly group and then one of the maths tasks from our grid. So last week if we brought in our homework then we don’t have anything to do this week except for reading. We still have to read our personal reading book this week but I don’t think we have to record it in our homework books.
Specialist Captains
Performing Arts
All the students have been working really hard on the production and doing dress rehearsals. Dress rehearsals are doing a rehearsal with most of the props and all of the costumes. We have also been doing the final tweeks to each of the scenes. I don’t think anyone can believe our production is this Thursday! Everyone has worked so hard to make this so good. This includes teachers, students and our amazing community members who have helped make costumes, props and much more.
Environmental captains
Izzy L., Summer K.
The second week back, from holidays Summer and I announced the winners of Nude Food which were 5/6A they were rewarded with a lolly jar.
The yard has been looking really clean so just a reminder to go to the eating area if you have any rubbish.
House Captains
Touch Football
This term we have been learning a new sport called touch football. Touch football is a sport that is similar to rugby. The rules are watered down and there is no tackling. In touch football, once you run and get touched you put the ball down and lightly roll the ball through your legs. Once you have been touched seven times, the ball will be given to the opposing team. To get points, you need to score a try. To score a try, you need to place the ball down behind the cones on the opposite side of the field.
AV Report:
Over the past couple of weeks we have not been doing digital technology because we have had production practice taking priority. Hopefully classes will resume in the next fortnight.
Upcoming Events
