FOUNDATION NEWS
It has been a great two weeks in Foundation!
In Literacy, students have been focusing on the skill of predicting. We have been focusing on relating texts to our own lives and using this information to make a good prediction. Students have also been focusing on improving their handwriting each week. This fortnight we have practiced ladder letters (t,u,y) and one armed robot letters (r,m,n,h). At the end of the week, we will be putting our knowledge of healthy foods into play by preparing healthy snacks that we will share and eat at the end of our language experience.
In Math's, we have been learning about sharing and how to share a collection equally and fairly. We have also started to explore data collection. Students have been learning how to ask a good question and then collecting data based on that question. We will now be exploring how to put that data into a simple graph and make conclusions based on that data.
Students had a great day at Chesterfield Farm and really enjoyed the activities. We milked cows, learnt about the clothing we can make from specific animals, where specific food comes from and how it is processed to become the food we eat everyday.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in contact with either of us.
Kind Regards,
Nat & Andrew
GRADE 1/2 NEWS
Firstly, a HUGE congratulations to all of our 1/2 superstars. What a fantastic job they did in our 2022 production. We are all very proud.
What a busy term so far, we've already reached the halfway mark! Here's a snapshot of what we've been up to.
LITERACY
In Reading, students have been working on inferring and using clues from the words and pictures in a text to help build their understanding. In Writing, students have been working hard on writing recounts around the events on at school. We are also consolidating our understanding on how to write interesting introductions to stories, as well as, beginning our letter writing unit. We have also been learning about synonyms and antonyms.
NUMERACY
In Numeracy, we are revisiting place value. Students are working on representing two and three digit numbers. We have even exploring four and five digit numbers, how clever are we?! We are continuing to focus on 3D shapes and their features. We have been playing lots of hands on games including 3D shape memory. On the Chromebook's, students are continuing to demonstrate their understanding through Essential Assessment and games.
INQUIRY/ART
In Inquiry, we will each be planting some seeds. We are aiming to teach students how to safely grow seeds into plants and how to care for them properly. We will learn more about this on our excursion to Rayner's Orchard (forms are now overdue).
In Art, we have been busily preparing our placemats for the up coming 1/2 Dinner!
Reminders:
- Please return your production costume ASAP.
- 1/2 Dinner forms are due, parent helpers are required if you're free :)
- Coach Approach forms to be returned.
GRADE 3/4 NEWS
Literacy:
We continue with our spelling and grammar concepts on a weekly basis, students should be practicing these words weekly for homework. In Writing students have been creating recount writing, especially linked to our whole school production. Our Reading Comprehension for weeks 5 & 6 students continued on with finding important information in a variety of texts to answer literal questions.
Numeracy:
In weeks 5 & 6 students have been/will be investigating…
· Area – the space inside a 2D shape – cm2 and m2 (We can use multiplication to calculate)
· Perimeter – the measurement around the edge of a 2D shape – mm, cm, m – a measurement of length. (We use addition to calculate)
· Solving word problems – Figuring our what information is important and what information can be discarded?
Inquiry:
This term our inquiry unit is Civics & Citizenship. Students will be learning about the difference between rules and laws, and democracy. We will also investigate the 3 different levels of government; local, state and federal.
Art:
We looked at Vincent Van Gogh’s art works. Students recreated their own interpretation of his famous “Starry Night” painting using crayons and water colours.
Other:
Hats are required for term 4.
Production costumes: If you child borrowed a costume, or part thereof, could it be washed and returned asap.

GRADE 5/6 NEWS
School Captains:
Maths:
In numeracy the past fortnight we had an incursion about saving money with money talks. We learnt about different types of ways to purchase things and how games can take your money without you noticing. We had to do a roleplay so we could understand how saying no is a good thing in some situations. Also in numeracy we revised angles and how to correctly draw them with a protractor and what kinds of angles there are.
Homework Report:
So after two weeks without homework for the 5/6s (due to the production and an unofficial long weekend), everyone has been getting their homework done this week to the best of their ability. Hopefully, if everyone brings in their homework this week, and for the weeks to come, we will not have homework every second week. This agreement is in place in the 5/6 building until the end of the year.
Literacy:
In literacy this week we worked on exposition writing. Exposition writing is a mix of persuasive writing and an informative piece put together. It takes a little bit to plan out. You have to pick a topic about something you are passionate and an expert about, then you have to choose 3 subjects, e.g. for dogs: company, life span and exercise, then you write 3 paragraphs on what you know about them. The goal of this writing piece is to teach someone about a subject they don’t know much about.
Promotions team:
On Tuesday 8th of November most school students participated in a sushi and pizza day. We all had a choice to have sushi, pizza or both for lunch that day. It was a nice change up from our usual lunches. Our school canteen helped out by ordering all our food and preparing the bags that the food would be put in.
Av Report:
In the last couple of weeks all of the grade ⅚ have been learning about PCs and other computer parts. To help us gain a better understanding, we had to use a PC glossary that also had words related to different PC parts. Once we found the word, we had to go on a google doc, locate that word and write down the meaning of that word.
Environmental Captains
By Izzy and Summer K.
This week the yard has been looking nice and clean which is very good. If any teachers need a compost bin in their classroom come and see us Izzy and Summer K. In the compost bin we DO NOT want anything but fruit and vegetables.
Specialist Captains
Performing Arts
We have recently finished our production and everyone did so well. All the teachers and students are absolutely amazing by making the production go so smoothly and we are very appreciative of all the people who came to watch the production.
Last week in performing arts the 5/6s did a recount on how the production went, their contributions for the production and how they felt about the production. I think the production was an amazing experience for everyone and I would love to do this again.
Auslan Report
In Auslan we revised the alphabet and numbers and timed each other doing the Auslan alphabet to see how much we could improve our time.
House Captains:
Fairhills Basketball Cup
On Wednesday, the 2nd of November, a girl basketball team and a boy basketball team went to the Fairhills High School to participate in a basketball tournament! The boys basketball team came in 4th place and the girls team also came in 4th place! It was a fun day but it was pretty disappointing that we didn't win. However, there is always a next time!
Events coming up:
-This week we will be doing athletics on the school grounds during PE.

Months of hard work and practise paid off and thanks to our amazing audience, they enjoyed their hard earned applause!

BORONIA RSL REMEMBERANCE DAY SERVICE
On Sunday 6th November some of our Grade 6 students represented our school at the Boronia RSL Remembrance Day Service at the Arboretum. Well done to Ethan for reading the Acknowledgement of Country, supported by Jade and Jacob. Well done also to Ella B, Emma, Boris, Izzy and Raiya who sang confidently in the Knox Schools Combined Choir. They performed I Am Australian and Advance Australia Fair. They should all be very proud of the way they represented our school with pride and confidence.
