PRINCIPAL REPORT
BUNNINGS BBQ
What a HUGE success our Scoresby Bunnings BBQ was on Sunday. Profit made was $2,202.70! Wow!
A MASSIVE thank you needs to go out to Leonora and Stuart Minican for all their time and effort to coordinate this exceptionally run event! They ran a well-oiled machine, supported by a myriad of parents. Thank you so much to our parents for donating their time and good humour, Darren Patterson, Cameron Mann, Amy McCoy, Sarah Gayton-Kay, Mathew Minton, Erin Weegberg, Nicole O'Brien, and staff members Lara James (also one of our parents), Jannine Kinghorne and Ron, her husband, along with Andrew Reardon.
Fun facts -
Who knew that people order 2 sausages in one piece of bread - it's called the 'Double Banger'!
Under no circumstances can onions go on top of the sausage, they MUST go underneath.
A lot of canines visit Bunnings on a Sunday and get sausages as a treat!
Some people only come to Bunnings on the weekends to buy a sausage 🌭 (I hope they got one cooked by Stuart!).
I personally learnt that you get a very sore arm after 2.5 hours turning sausages on a BBQ.
The amount of work Leonora and Stuart put into all of our school events, not just this one, for our school community, on a daily basis, needs to be commended – THANK YOU to you both from all of our WV Community!
FOUNDATION
It's been a busy fortnight in Foundation, here's a bit about what we have been doing.
LITERACY
We have been exploring non-fiction texts, in particular information texts. We have learnt that these books have facts, labelled diagrams, a table of contents and SO much information. Labelling has been big focus, check out the photos below - we labelled the teachers! In Reading, students have been learning how to summarise the beginning of texts, we now know that when we summarise we need to share the important information.
NUMERACY
In Numeracy, we have been investigating different addition strategies that can help us to become more efficient and accurate when we are solving addition equations. We have used tens frames, counters and number lines to support our working out. We have also been recapping the days of the week.
INQUIRY
This term we are learning about Living vs. Non living things. So far, we have identified living and non living things and have started to think about 'what makes something living?'.
GRADE 1/2
Welcome back to Term 3. It was lovely to see so many smiling faces greeting us on the first day back. The students all seem excited to get back into learning which is fabulous to see!
We are looking forward to welcoming Mrs Terjesen back in Week 3. Mrs Ellison has had a fabulous time working in 1/2C for the last 11 weeks and we know she will be missed by students across the whole level. She will be resuming her role in the Tutor Program in Week 4, so although she won't be based in the Junior building, we know she won't be far away!
LITERACY
This term we have begun exploring a new genre of writing - Procedural Texts. The 1/2 students have been learning about the purpose, features and organisation of a procedural text and began by using pictures and short sentences to sequence the method. In the coming weeks, the students will be writing their own procedural texts based on cooking and experiments conducted in the classroom.
Our class novel for this term is the much loved classic 'Stuart Little' by E.B. White. Although we are only a short way into the book, the 1/2 students are enjoying the text and have already explored the setting and characters and used some descriptive language to describe the 'Little Family.'
Alongside our class novel, students participate in daily reading sessions; whole class and small group, aiming to consolidate the students' decoding skills as well as improve comprehension skills. This is achieved through sequencing activities, vocabulary work, establishing the main idea and using critical thinking skills, such as identifying the author's purpose and message, as well as making text-to-self connections.
NUMERACY
This term we have started our Number focus with Multiplication. The 1/2 students have learnt that multiplication means 'groups of' and also can recognise the symbol associated. Students have begun solving simple multiplication problems using the strategy of repeated addition , for example 5x3 is the same as 5+5+5.
The 1/2 students have also begun a unit of work on Time and have been looking at calendars and their features, as well as recognising the difference between seconds, minutes and hours and using this knowledge to predict how long a task will take.
INQUIRY
Our Inquiry focus for this term is Science, looking specifically at chemical science and earth and space science. Students have begun investigating how everyday materials can be changed by bending, twisting, stretching etc and have classified and sorted materials, considering what the properties they have in common.
REMINDERS:
Green bags containing take home readers, homework books and reading logs are expected at school each day. As part of our morning reading routine, items from this bag are needed each morning.
Around 12:30pm each day, students take a break from their learning to have a piece of fruit or vegetable. Please ensure you have packed your child an adequate and appropriate snack for this time.
As always, our classrooms are always open for you to visit or should you wish to chat with your child's classroom teacher.
The 1/2 Team :)
GRADE 3/4
Welcome to Term 3 in 3/4! We have had a wonderful start back and it was great to hear the students all enjoyed their break.
In Inquiry this term our focus is 'Science', we will be exploring all things chemical and physical science. In week 1, to explore the different states of matter (solid, liquid and gases) students made Oobleck by combining cornstarch and water. Oobleck is interesting as it can behave as a solid or a liquid! Students loved the hands on learning experience (see photos below).
We are continuing our Science theme throughout other learning areas with spelling words focused on -ology words and -ist words such as zoology and geologist. In writing we are learning to write a procedural text which includes having a goal, listing materials and have step by step instructions- very important for conducting experiments.
Term 3 numeracy has started by learning about fractions and probability and chance.
Students are reminded that homework is sent home on a Monday and is due back every Friday (including reading recorded into their diaries).
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to get in contact with your students teacher.
GRADE 5/6
LITERACY
This term we are focused on informative texts that instruct or explain. We've started by looking at how to give specific instructions and use language and organisation to impact the effectiveness of these instructions. Students watched some 'exact instructions' videos and reflected on how they all went wrong! We have looked at the use of adverbs, prepositional phrases and noun groups to make sure our instructions are clear and able to be followed well.
MATHS
Our focus this term is on Patterns & Algebra. We've started by looking at mathematical algorithms, simple programming language and formulating simple algebraic rules to create coded messages. Students looked at how we use algorithms all the time in our every day life - looking at practical examples such as how we brush our teeth or how we eat a bowl of cereal. Students elicited the specific steps and began to use steps that included iteration (repeating steps) and branching (steps that include commands such as "if" and "when"). In measurement, students have looked at units of measurement and comparing and ordering different units of measurement. We estimated and measured length of different types of jumps, compared them with the jumps of Olympic athletes, estimated mass of different objects and discussed the different measurement systems around the world. Students looked at Monumental Measurement Mess-Ups - what can happen when we use the wrong measurement systems!
INQUIRY
Students have been learning about electricity and electrical circuits. We began the term with some practical activities looking at conductors, insulators, switches and batteries. Students got creative with circuit elements, we created batteries from fruit and starchy vegetables and created our own switches from paperclips and cardboard. We have learnt that some materials conduct electricity and some insulate - and that these are used for different purposes. We learnt that electricity is the flow of electrons around a circuit, which must be closed to allow the electrons to flow. Students have spent alot of time building different types of circuits and experimenting with different amounts of power and circuitry elements.
SPECIALIST NEWS - DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
Digital Technologies has started the new semester with students providing some feedback on what they have learned thus far and also the areas of interest they would like to explore further. In the coming weeks we will be looking at some of the finer aspects of using Google Docs for every day work tasks, including how to effectively use the spell-checking facility and also how to tabulate data.
SPECIALIST - VISUAL ARTS
Newspapers required URGENT.
If you have any newspapers at home and would like to donate them, please leave them at the Art Room door.
We are always using all types of paper in the Art Room so if you have a contact or know of someone who has bulk paper to give away please contact us.
