PRINCIPAL REPORT
It has been another engaging fortnight of Learning at Wattle View and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting around to different classes and seeing all of the wonderful work that is being done. I was lucky enough to take a session of Performing Arts with the 5/6s, where we learnt some new chords on the ukulele and played along to a song. We also had a blast in Foundation Performing Arts, showing off our best dance moves and keeping in time as we sung to a beat. When in 3/4A, I got to explore some neighbouring countries with students, using an atlas to identify different flags and making comparisons between Australia and island nation populations.
Education Week Assembly
This Friday the 19th of May, we will be celebrating Education Week with an extended assembly. You are invited to join us in the celebrations from 2:40pm in the Gymnasium. Come and see our active Wattle View Learners 'move, make and motivate'. In addition to our regular assembly items, enjoy a performance from our State Schools Spectacular team and join in a whole school activity run by Mr Moeller. It is set to be a fun-filled afternoon and we look forward to seeing you there.
Footy Rules
We love our learners being active and trying new things, but lunchtime football has raised a few issues over the last couple of weeks and we've had to make some changes to how we play on the oval. It was announced to students at assembly last week that the different cohorts are only to play football with others from the same cohort. This means that the F-2s can enjoy a game together, the 3/4s can have a kick around and the 5/6s must keep their game to themselves. We have also made the call for no tackling and bumping. This way, everyone can continue to play on the oval safely and we can enjoy the great game that is AFL football.
Mother's Day Stall
THANK YOU to the parent helpers who volunteered at the Mother’s Day Stall. It is not possible to run these events without our parent volunteers and we appreciate all the organising, time and work you put in. We hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day on Sunday and a sign up sheet will be sent out later in the year for help with the Father's Day Stall. Stay tuned!
VPRC
The Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge has begun and we already have some fabulous people who have logged their books and completed the challenge. If you are unsure of how to sign in to log your child's books, please see your classroom teacher or email me directly at andrew.reardon@education.vic.gov.au for more support. You can follow this link to the log in page and your child's credentials should have been sent home with them.
Professional Practice Day
Friday the 26th of May will be a pupil free day as staff come to school to engage in a day of professional practice. Staff will be busy working in their teams to complete detailed reports on your child/ren for Semester 1. More information will be released closer to the end of the term regarding reports. Please keep an eye out on Compass for that.
Wear It Yellow
This is just a friendly reminder as there are still a few weeks until this event. On Friday the 2nd of June, to end Reconciliation Week, our school is inviting all students to 'Wear It Yellow'. All students are welcome to wear yellow for the whole school day and we encourage you to go all out! If you are wishing to participate, please send your children to school with a gold coin donation. All donations will be directly donated to the Children's Ground: First Nations not-for-profit Organisation. We have officially signed up, so you will be able to see how much money is/has been raised on the Children's Ground website.
Car Parking
Please remember to abide by the council signs when picking up and dropping off. There are often parking inspectors on Wattletree Road and it is a 2 minute drop off zone. This also applies to the staff carpark, which should not be used for pick up and drop off purposes.
. . .
That's all for another fortnight at Wattle View. If you ever need to contact us, don't be a stranger, come and say hello. If we don't see you out on yard duty, pop in to the office and have a chat.
Kind Regards,
Andrew Reardon

We even saw the ice begin to melt!
We have measured.

Working with MAB.
Exploring Ferntree Gully on our Community Walk.
We listened to instructions.
We did a scavenger hunt with our buddies.
We had lots of fun!
GRADE 1/2 NEWS
There have been lots of exciting things happening in the Grade 1/2 area recently!
Literacy
In writing, we have been focusing on creating our Information Reports. Each student has chosen a topic, written facts about their topic, and drawn illustrations with captions and labels. It has been great to see the students being able to identify the difference between facts and opinions and seeing how well they can 'stretch' out their facts into detailed sentences.
In reading, we have been focusing on visualising texts and moving into some more complex comprehension strategies such as critical thinking. The classes have been reading a range of familiar and new texts, and have been looking at both fiction and non-fiction books.
We have been continuing to look at spelling patterns, looking at /j/ and /qu/ over the last fortnight. We've also revisited some topics from last term; consolidating our understanding of proper nouns and common nouns.
The highlight of the week in Grade 1/2 is hearing about the adventures of George in 'George's Marvellous Medicine' and each class has enjoyed hearing about some of the exciting (but quite disgusting!) potions that he makes for his Grandma.
Numeracy
We have continued to focus on addition and have been able to practise solving addition problems using a strategy of choice. This week, we have looked at using tens friends, tens frames, and doubles to help us solve addition problems.
This week, the Grade 1/2 classes also visited the 5/6 building and practised collecting data in preparation for their excursion to Mountain Gate. The students used tally marks to count the hanging circles on the ceiling of the building or counted the colour squares on the floor.
Inquiry
On Tuesday, we went on our first excursion of the year to Mountain Gate. The purpose of this visit was to explore our local community and see what shops and services are available. The students had the opportunity to use tally marks to collect their data. We all had a great day and were pleased to have a break in the weather as we made our way there and back! A big thank you to all of the parents who volunteered on the day!
GRADE 3/4 NEWS
Over the last few weeks in 3/4 world we have been very busy extending our knowledge of the World Around Us! We have learnt about Australia's states and territories, the continents and oceans of the world, Australia's neighbouring countries and are ready to begin our inquiry projects! This terms inquiry projects ask students to research Australia or a country in South America to create a travel brochure. We are already very excited to share our work with you at the end of the term.
Our inquiry topic has formed the basis of many of our Literacy and numeracy sessions- in Literacy we have been writing explanation texts on the life cycle of animals and the water cycle, while numeracy we are starting to focus on reading tables and data on the populations and area of various countries. Students have been practising their extended reading skills while reading about our Neighbouring countries and visualising what Machu Picchu might look like after reading a text description.
The 3/4 Teachers have loved the students enthusiasm to participate in weekly writers worshops and numeracy workshops. These are weekly sessions designed to allow students to work with different teachers on specific writing or numeracy skills targeted at thier level.
Please don't forget, students bring home their homework and new spelling words each Monday and it is expected to be returned completed every Friday.
Reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns!
GRADE 5/6 NEWS
English
In writing this week, we have continued our work on information reports. Students have learnt about how information reports are organised using a general statement, paragraphs that describe different aspects of the topic under subheadings as well as images with captions. We have been writing reports on different Asian countries. In reading, we have been noticing how good readers ask questions while they read and that we ask lots of different types of questions. We have been reading different stories that involve morals and messages and using our background knowledge to infer what the author is trying to teach us.
Mathematics
Year 5/6 students have been deep into their learning about fractions, decimals and percentages this week. We have been working in focus groups looking at concepts such as recognising equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions and multiplying and dividing decimals,. Last week we completed our unit on angles by creating some angle writing and classifying and measuring the internal angles. We have started a unit on time looking at 12 and 24 hour time systems and how to calculate elapsed time using AM and PM notation. We are going to use our newfound knowledge to plan a trip to some of the places we have studied in our inquiry unit!
Inquiry
We have been continuing our learning about Australia's Asian neighbours and Australia's relationships with different countries. We have looked at different festivals around the world and investigated some of the wild and wacky traditions that are celebrated in different countries - did you know in Scotland on New Years Eve, people carry fireballs through the streets and throw them into the harbour?! We looked at statistics of different languages spoken around the world and investigated the traditions of Chinese New Year which is celebrated in many countries around the world. Students looked at Antarctica and how many countries claiming territory on the continent have to work together.
