FOUNDATION NEWS
Welcome back to Term 4 Foundation Families. We have a very busy term ahead of us with lots of different activities taking place. At this stage, we have the following events to look forward to:
Our whole school production
Chesterfield Farm excursion
Fairy tale dress up day
This week in Literacy, students have been learning that <au> & <al> can make the /aw/ sound. We have now finished learning all of the tricky words! The Foundation students are now revising how to read the tricky words and we are continuing to test students each week. To move onto the next colour, students must be able to read their tricky words (according to the list they are on). If your child has completed all tricky words, they must then learn how to spell these words.
During Term 4, students will now be revising our comprehension strategies (predicting, summarising, visualising, making connections). We have been exploring new stories each week and practising these strategies as a class and independently.
In Numeracy, we are working on counting forwards and backwards from any starting point. We are encouraging students to recall the next four numbers of a given number. You can make this into a game during dinner time or on the car ride to and from school by asking your child “What comes before/after the number 6”. Students are also revising 2D and 3D shapes by building structures and identifying the shapes used.
We have started our Science Inquiry unit this week, looking closely at food and fibre production where students will be exploring where food comes from and the process it takes to get to our plates or a piece of clothing. For Respectful Relationships, students will be practising stress management, friendship building and strategies we can use to get along, through fundamental play sessions.
Friendly reminders:
You child must bring their green bag every day as we use this every day.
Please return production notices ASAP
Please return excursion notices ASAP
Your child needs to wear a hat during Term 4
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please send either of us an email or just pop in to say hello.
Kind Regards,
Nat & Andrew
GRADE 1/2 NEWS
It's been a fantastic start to Term 4 (can't believe we're saying that already!), here's a little bit about what we've been learning over the past fortnight.
LITERACY
In Writing, students have been exploring the world of advertisements and how they are used to persuade us. We have even had a go at beginning to create our own advertisements, carefully considering the colours and techniques that we use. In Reading, students have been improving their inferring skills. We have been using different picture story books to work out the emotions different characters are feeling, based on their facial expressions.
NUMERACY
In Numeracy we have had a strong focus on fractions. We have learnt about halves, thirds, quarters and some of us have even been looking at eighths, we know that the most important thing about fractions is that each section is an equal size. This skill is a great one to practise at home, if you're cutting up fruit, vegetables or even having to cut up a pizza, you can practise identifying the different fractions.
We have also had a focus on 2D shapes, recapping what we already know and how to identify the properties of different shapes.
INQUIRY
Over the past two weeks, we have been looking into correct waste management. Students have been sorting what items should be composted and what should be recycled. Students created their own little bins, either compost or recycling, and had to cut out different items from magazines that could be recycled or composted.
Just a couple of reminders:
Rayner's Farm Visit - Last week students came home with an excursion form for our visit to Rayner's Farm in Woori Yallock. Already students are so excited to visit the farm, see what is grown, taste some fruits and even ride on a tractor! Permission forms should be returned to school by Friday 4th November.
1/2 Dinner - In Week 10 of the term on Tuesday 6th December - so still a little while away, we are planning to host a 1/2 Dinner. This will tie in with our inquiry focus on 'Food'. More information will come on this in a few weeks time.
GRADE 3/4 NEWS
Literacy:
We continue with our spelling and grammar concepts on a weekly basis. In Writing, students have been analysing the structure of persuasive texts in detail and learning to upscale their own persuasive texts. Students investigated why paragraphs are an important feature in all writing genres. Our Reading Comprehension foci concentrated on identifying context clues in sentences and text structures, revising language features and making connections with a text.
Numeracy:
In weeks 1 and 2 students have been investigating money values and transactions. They have also learnt about angles; what they are, where they are and how to measure them using a protractor. Angles vocabulary included; turn, rays/arms, vertex protractor, degrees, right, obtuse, rotation, straight and acute.
Inquiry:
This term our inquiry unit is Civics & Citizenship. Students will be learning about the difference between rules and laws, and democracy.
Art:
To align with our inquiry unit, art in week one was centred around graffiti art. They learnt about Keith Haring (a well-known USA graffiti artist) who was arrested many times in his career for breaking the law around public graffiti laws. Students created their own Keith Haring inspired artwork.
Other:
Hats are required for term 4.
Please return permission forms for the 27th Oct whole school production practice at the venue.
Bring in costumes for production asap.
Buy your tickets for the production – ask your family, friends and neighbours too!
Homework is a requirement for all students. If students don’t complete all three components of the homework (Spelling, times tables, reading), they will be asked to attend ‘Happy, Happy Homework Club’ during a lunch time that is convenient for their teacher, to complete it then. Reading should be entered into their green reading logbook.
Icy poles start again this week – 50c
GRADE 5/6 NEWS
SCHOOL CAPTAINS
Numeracy:
In Numeracy this week, grade 5/6 students started exploring the Money and Financial Maths concept. The level is split into 3 groups based on their understanding of the concept. Some of the things students have been learning are studying Australian notes and coins, calculating the change for simple transactions, rounding to the nearest 5 cents, financial planning, calculating a discount, mortgages and wages. This topic will continue until the end of week 3 but we are learning a lot!
Inquiry:
This term in Inquiry, we are studying Economics. We are learning about supply and demand and how it affects the cost of things. It tied in very nicely with our current maths topic, which focuses on Money and Financial Mathematics. In the Economics unit, we will also learn about crucial things to understand, such as why we need to pay taxes, and why some goods cost as much as they do. I am very excited to learn more about this important topic that plays a huge role in every adult person’s life. I am very excited to learn more about money and its role in society this term.
Homework:
These past 2 weeks in homework we’ve been doing the same usual thing. We’ve been doing our weekly reading review. Thirty minutes of reading for Monday through to Thursday is ideal. We also have to do a maths task from our grid, then there’s our spelling words to practise. At the end of the week, we have a spelling test but now we’ve changed it so it’s now done in our own classrooms. We now also have only 10 words so that’s 8 less words that we have to revise and remember.
Promotions team:
This week on Friday, there is a ‘Fairytale Dress Up Day’. We have highly encouraged students to participate.
There have been students popping in and out of classrooms for production practice.
Also coming up is a ‘Halloween Dress Up Day’ on Friday 28th October.
Environmental:
Since the 23rd of August, we have been doing Nude Food.
Just to recap, Nude Food is when you bring food without any type of wrapper.
Every classroom takes a tally of the students who bring Nude Food to school everyday. The class who gets the most points wins a lolly jar. A lot of the students participated in the program and have noticed that the school is looking cleaner.
We are announcing the winning class on Friday the 14th of October and they will share the lolly jar as a class.
House Captains:
Last term, Mr. Moeller and the House Captains started putting a variety of sports equipment in tubs for the students to borrow at recess and lunch. Since then, we have lost quite a few balls. We highly encourage the students who use the sports equipment to return it (in the same condition they were borrowed in!). Mr. Moeller has bought a bigger tub to fit all the balls in. It is a good system and it has been very helpful for everyone!
On Monday we had 5/6 sport. We played volleyball, basketball, soccer and kickball. We have been doing a house colour competition and at the end of the competition we will see which house wins!
Av Report:
In the first week back at school, we had to write down our knowledge of what is inside of a computer and how all the things come together. In our opinion, we had to make the computer work and we also had to describe what you know about the history of computers and the Internet.
SPECIALIST CAPTAINS
Auslan
The grade 5-6s have been working really hard on their ‘Travelling the World in AUSLAN” slideshows and have started presenting them so ask your child to sign the 3 countries that they have chosen.
The Foundation to Grade 2 students have been working on signing the different people in your family so if you can, ask your child/ren to sign Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister and friend and ask them if they know any other signs.
Performing Arts
In Performing Arts, all the 5/6 classes have been working really hard on their class performance and the main cast members have been working extremely hard on learning their choreography for The Rockin’ Tale of Snow White.
Recently, Mrs Lochart (our Performing Arts teacher) has given out the understudy list so the people chosen have been learning their lines.
The whole of 5/6 have been doing so well on designing and building the props that are going to be on set at the production such as scissors or a spider (foreshadowing).
Mr Reardon has been making a coffin perfect for one of the scenes (foreshadowing).
Do you know we have a Facebook private group called Parents of WVPS.
This group consists of current parents at our school and is used as a communication tool.
