Year 10 Humanities

In year 10, students can select any number of Humanities electives, provided their overall course meets the minimum literacy, numeracy and science requirements.

Geography:

This subject introduces students to key geographical concepts and skills related to significant spatial distributions and patterns of a variety of phenomena, and students evaluate their implications. This subject is separated into two Units: Environmental Change and Management and Tourism. This subject will prepare students for VCE Geography.

Environmental change and management focuses on investigating environmental geography. It begins with an overview of environmental change and the factors that influence it. Students investigate a specific environmental change in Australia and one other country. They examine the causes and consequences of the change and strategies to manage the change.

The Tourism unit focuses on investigating the key characteristics of tourism: where it has developed, the various forms, how it has changed and continues to change and its impact on people, places and environments, issues and challenges of ethical tourism. Students explore different examples of tourism within Australia to support

their learning.

Fieldwork is a critical element of Geography, so students can expect at least one excursion to a location such as: The Great Ocean Road, Altona Beach, Torquay, Birrarung Marr, The You Yangs, Werribee Gorge, Newport Lakes

Legal Studies:

This subject explores, evaluates and investigates the rights and responsibilities of an Australian citizen. Students investigate the role of political parties and the formation of government. They examine the key features of Australia’s court system, including jurisdictions and how courts apply and interpret the law, resolve disputes and make law through judgements. Students will explore the elements of criminal and civil law and will use media to examine and discuss recent case studies in these areas, analysing the key principles of Australia’s justice system, including equality before the law, independent judiciary, and right of appeal. Students will also investigate historical rights movements including United States and Australian civil rights movements. This subject will prepare students for VCE Legal Studies.

Proposed fieldwork includes: The Magistrates Court and Victorian Parliament.

20th Century History:

Students explore the causes and events of World War II. They investigate how the world changed (politically, socially and environmentally) post World War II. They investigate the relationship between The Soviet Union and America during the Cold War period and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Students develop their understanding of how people are connected to different places and how geographical data can be analysed to gain advantage during times of conflict. This subject will prepare students for VCE History.

Proposed fieldwork: The Jewish Holocaust Centre.

Business Management:

Students investigate how the Australian economy is performing and how we interact with the global economy. They make links between economic performance and standard of living and how this may differ in different regions. Using indicators students measure the performance of the Australian economy and investigate different ways that businesses can remain competitive across different markets. Through the development of their own business, students develop their innovative skills and enterprising behaviours. This subject prepares students for VCE Business Management.
