Students will understand what annotation is, why it is important, and how to write strong annotations in their sketchbook.
Students can:
Explain what annotation means
Write clear sentences about their ideas
Use art vocabulary (elements & principles)
Reflect on strengths and improvements
Do Now:
Why do artists write in their sketchbook?
Think-pair-share:
Why not just draw?
What does writing help us show?
Shows understanding
Explains design decisions
Uses art vocabulary
Helps with higher marks
Shows reflection and improvement
"I created a snowman and star design inspired by Chirstmas"
"I used bold colours to attract a audience"
"Next time, I would refine the porportions to make it more realistic"
Weak annotation:
I like this design. It looks cool.
Strong annotation:
I used curved lines to create movement in my design. The bright blue creates contrast against the dark background, making the focal point stand out. I need to improve the shading to create more depth.
Step 1- Annotate each page using the examples above.
Write about what you were doing;
For this study I was learning how to.....
I was exploring ....
The area that was the most successful was ....
The area to be improved ....
Further exploration in this area .....
Here are some annotation questions you might consider for your printmaking project:
What printmaking technique is used (e.g., form, gelli plate, linocut, etching etc)
What materials were used in the print? How do they change the look or feel of the work?
Describe the steps involved in creating this print. What challenges have you faced during the process? How did you overcome them?
What was your main idea or theme for this print? What have inspired you?
what did you learn about printmaking through this project?
If you could redo this print, what would you change or do differently?
What new techniques or ideas would you like to explore in your next printmaking?

Add a title- what printmaking technique is used (e.g. form, linocut, etching, Gelliplate etc)
