Define ‘Appropriation’.
Find 2 artists that ‘appropriate’…
Obtain one example (by each artist) of their artwork, and a copy of the artists’ work from whom they appropriated (the original artwork).
Copy these 4 artworks and label each with artist’s name, title and date
Explain what the two artists have done to their artwork to change it from the original / to make it individual.
3. Do you think that it is appropriate for artists to ‘appropriate’? Is their work still original?
How far do you think artists should be allowed to go in using other peoples’ artwork?
Explain your opinions.
Brainstorm/Research –
1. Choose 3 possible artworks to consider appropriating (include a printed copy as well as the artists name, title, date of production)
2. Create mind-maps to explore how you might choose to appropriate each work
3. Include any visuals you find of already existing appropriations for each work AND any other visuals you will use to help generate ideas
Generation of Ideas –
1. Choose your favourite option of the 3 artworks
2. Generate 3 compositions/designs for possible ways to appropriate the artwork
3. Annotate each design to explain what you have changed from the original
Elements and Principles –
1. Choose your favourite composition/design
2. Create 4 different versions of the composition/design by experimenting with 2 elements and 2 principles(1 of each in the 4 versions)
3. Annotate each design to explain your decisions
Final Artwork –
Create a final artwork using the design and materials of your choice
Choose a method for presenting the artwork
