Technology refers to any mechanical or electronic process used in a designer's workspace or workflow. Technology is often discussed with economics as, despite the costs of purchasing improved technologies, their use can lead to greater productivity. Examples of ways technology is used to save money include; time-saving in design, virtual materials and structural testing, reduced wastage of materials and greater accuracy. Advancements in technology enable designers to explore new possibilities and solutions. Incorporating the latest technologies can enhance a product's functionality, efficiency, and overall user experience.
Designing interactive experiences involves the use of various technologies to create engaging and user-centred interactions. User Interface (UI) Design focuses on creating visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces for digital products. Digital technologies such as graphic design software and prototyping tools are commonly used to design and visualise user interfaces. UI designers work on elements like layout, typography, colour schemes, icons, and other visual components to ensure a seamless and aesthetically pleasing experience. User Experience (UX) Design is concerned with the overall user journey and how users interact with a product. This involves technologies such as wireframing tools to create low-fidelity prototypes that outline the structure and flow of the interactive experiences. Front-end developers use technologies to bring the visual and interactive elements of a design to life in web and app interfaces. Motion graphics and animation add extra engagement to interactive experiences. Motion design enhances the user experience by providing feedback, guiding users, and making interactions more delightful and intuitive.
Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies immerse users in engaging experiences. AR overlays digital content onto the real-world using devices like smartphones or AR glasses, while VR creates entirely virtual environments that users can explore using headsets. Tools like Unity and Unreal Engine are commonly used to develop AR and VR applications, allowing designers to create compelling interactive scenarios, simulations, and storytelling experiences.
Message designers use digital-based methods with the mediums of vector or raster-based, and page layout programs to design visual communications. Digital technology has shaped every facet of design through developments in the flexibility, portability, editing, enhancing, appropriating, copying, recording, sending, animating, projecting and exhibiting of design solutions. Electronic technologies in design have shaped how designs are made, how they look and how they function.
Object and environmental designers use Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs to design in real space and create models of forms for parts and assemblies. Three-dimensional drawings are output automatically from CAD models to create 3rd Angle Orthogonal drawings, perspective views and Plans and Elevations. Sophisticated CAD engineering programs enable designers to test materials for strength and durability and fit. CAD also enables architects to specify door, window and maintenance schedules and estimate construction costings for building construction.
CAD models can be exported for complex and realistic rendering. The 'Toy Story' movies are renderings created using CAD software. CAD models can be exported for 3D printing and CNC routing of parts for assembly as prototypes.
