FORM and FUNCTION
FACTORS AFFECTING DESIGN
Needs: When starting a design project the need or problem must be thoroughly researched and explored before possible solutions can be found.
Function: A design solution is successful if it does what it is meant to and solved the initial problem. If it does what it is meant to then it is said to be functional.
Aesthetics: The aesthetics of the design refers to the properties of the project related to appearance. The appearance can be described in terms of the elements of design, such as shape, size, line, direction, colour and texture.
Ergonomics: The Ergonomics of a design refers to how it is fitted to the structure of the body. Designers will use measurements that consider the length and size of every part of the body and the design will support this structure to ensure the body is held in a safe supported position.
Environmental consequences: Sustainable technologies use less energy, fewer limited resources, do not deplete natural resources, do not directly pollute the environment and can be used or recycled at the end of their useful life.
