Step1: Using a tenon saw and bench hook cut the groove off one end and sand smooth so it fits flush with the housing for the lid (the groove) on the two sides.
Note: the offcut can be used as a ‘handle’ to open your lid.
Step 1: Using a sanding block and sandpaper sand all inside faces and edges smooth to prepare them for nailing. Begin with 120 then 180 and 240 grit sandpaper.
Note: DO NOT SAND THE END GRAIN.
Step 1: Glue and nail one side to the ends. With ends facing up wipe off excess glue with a damp rag.
Step 2: Glue and nail the second side to the ends. Again remove excess glue.
Step 3: Use a hammer and nail punch to punch nails just below the surface. Fill holes with a small amount of timber putty.
Step 1: Use the box to trace a piece of ply/MDF for the base.
Step 2: Apply glue to the bottom of the box and place on the base. Cramp with quick release clamps, between two offcuts of timber.
Step 3: Remove any excess glue with a damp rag.
Step1. Fill nail holes with timber putty and allow to dry.
Step 2. Use hand plane to remove base overhang.
Step 3. Sand sides and ends of box using various grades of garnet paper (120, 180, 240). Remember to remove the arris.
Step 4. Sand lid with 180 and 240 grit paper. Make edges smooth so the lid opens and closes easily.
Step 1. Apply three to five (3-5) layers of shellac to seal the timber.
Step 2. Sand lightly with 400 grit paper after last coat.
Step 3. Apply beeswax with a scouring pad/steel wool and buff to a shiny finish.
