Today Madii Himbury came and spoke to Year 8 about her Winter Olympic journey and overcoming challenges to compete in mogul skiing. Her story inspired the students to be the best they can be - whether that’s in school, home, on the sporting field or with friends.
Olympics Unleashed connects athletes with schools across the country to inspire students to find and follow their passion and provide lessons in goal setting, overcoming challenges and developing resilience.
Thank you Madii for sharing your story with us today!
YEAR 7 POSTIVE RELATIONSHIPS FOCUS DAY
All of Year 7 recently spent a day at school participating in a range of activities aimed at encouraging healthy and respectful interpersonal interactions in the cohort. Students displayed the Newtown spirit by listening to each other and the presenters, providing excellent input and engaging with some big issues in a mature and compassionate way. The first session dealt with the importance of being an upstander in situations of cyberbulling. This was followed by a workshop presented by the Sydney Jewish Museum focusing on 'ending otherness', empathy and once again, standing up and speaking out against bullying. These messages were reinforced by a talk from a holocaust survivor who inspired the group with his story of overcoming adversity and his role in the establishment of Harmony Day. Then, Year 7 volunteers served a delicious lunch to the rest of their year group on the oval. The day was capped off with Year 7 flexing their creative muscles to produce a wide range of projects that responded to the main messages of the day. These included chalk pavement art, films, songs, painting and creative writing.
