The Semester 2 Drama Showcase featured a fantastic range of original performances devised by teachers and professional artists in collaboration with student companies over the semester. NHSPA Drama was thrilled to participate in the new NSW Drama Syllabus Introduction video. Students in Year 7 and Year 11 enjoyed the experience of working with a professional film crew as they documented their class activities. NHSPA HSC Drama students have received 19 nominations for OnStage for their work in the Drama HSC Practical exams. This year out of our 24 students, 9 were nominated for their Group Projects and 10 for their Individual Projects. Congratulations Year 12! We look forward to seeing what you achieve next.
The NHSPA/Australian Theatre for Young People co-production “Bathory Begins” was a triumph, and the season wrapped with a sell-out show early in Term 4. Playwrights Emme Hoy and Gretel Vella surprised the cast after the show and stayed to get a photo with our cast and director Warwick Doddrell. Congratulations to the outstanding cast and crew. The 2023 NSW State Drama Festival held in Week 3 of Term 4 was absolutely outstanding, featuring a plethora of NHSPA students in the various State Drama Ensembles and supported by the NHSPA VET Entertainment students (pictured) who did a very professional job backstage under the leadership of Ms Van Munster. Congratulations to all involved!

They first developed this piece in class in our Term 1 unit "Origins of Theatre" and performed it again at Gala (see above).
10 Drama Extension performed their original play “Hooked” for Years 7 and 8 in Week 4 and Year 9 in Week 7. Thank you to our school's Wellbeing Team and guests from Co-Assist and Headspace for joining our Q&A panel after the performance, providing professional advice and information on vaping and mobile phone dependence, and where to get support.
Addison Bourke from Year 10 recently completed work experience at the NIDA Design Workshop, gaining first hand experience in set and costume design and construction. Addison got hands on experience behind the scenes in the workshop as the team created set and costume for an opera production.
Yofy Dolef, Ayla Hunt and Wylie Best from Year 10 participated in Atyp's Work Experience Program, where they learnt about all aspects of running a theatre company and got to know other passionate drama students from all parts of Australia.
All three Year 8 Drama classes spent term 4 working on short scripted plays written by young playwrights from the "Page to Stage" series. In week 9 the three classes combined to present their own Page to Stage Festival in St George's Hall. Huge congratulations to all the performers who worked so hard to memorise lines and rehearse their pieces. Extra special thanks to those performers who picked up a script and filled in for absent cast members on the day making sure the show could go on!
Year 10 Drama Extension saw Little Eggs Collective's Lost Boys at the Seymour Centre in Week 7. The students were surprised and inspired by this immersive, original devised performance featuring music, song, dance, movement, spoken word and performance art inspired by the classic Peter Pan story.
What an exceptional year it's been in FILM STUDIES! We've crafted numerous films, achieving notable success at student film festivals, both on a local and international scale. Remarkably, one of our films emerged victorious in the Open Category, clinching the prestigious Australian Mini Smart Phone Film Of The Year Award (SF3). It's a testament to the creativity and distinctive perspectives that NHSPA students have showcased in their films throughout 2023.
For the Inner West Young Creatives Awards we had 6 films as FINALISTS from NHSPA (a total of 21 films chosen as Finalists from 421 entries). BEST FILM - (Yr 9/10 Category): "Heart to Heart" by Isaac Brown, Kieran Cashin & Joon Denholm, (starring Dylan and Alex) (Yr 9); RUNNER UP - (Yr 9/10 Category) "Shielding" by Kyla Vanderkley and Jessica Laffan (Yr 9); Inner West Librarians Award (All Categories) "KIN" by Elodie Kliendienst.

For the SF3 (International SmartFone FlickFest) we had 23 films as Finalists in the STUDENT section (SF3KIDS): "Happy Birthday" by Annabelle Szewcow, Trixie Raud and Evie LeMay; "Blood Will Have Blood" by Toby Makeham and Stella O'Brien; "Watching" by Indianna Thompson (Yr 9) who also won the SF3 Kids Best Director Award.
We had 4 films as finalists in the SF3MINI section (films under 3mins format): "Mocha Madness" By Greta O'Donoghue and Francesca Nagle, "Nightmare Amusement" by Asia Dunstone, "Look Up" by Indianna Thompson and "Perfect" by Matilda Cavanough & Edie Krone.
Francesca & Greta (Yr 9) won the SF3 Mini Best Australian Film for "Mocha Madness".
For the annual DET "Film By" Student Film Festival and the DET "CApture Film Festival", two festivals celebrating student films across NSW in a showcase evening at FOX STUDIO's we had 2 films chosen to represent NHSPA in both. These were: "Mocha Madness" By Greta O'Donoghue and Francesca Nagle and "Look Up" by Indianna Thompson.
For the annual V-Festival Student Film Festival (run by Rose Bay Secondary College) we have 2 films in the finals from 22 chosen and over 60 entries from High Schools across NSW. These were (Jnr Section): "Look Up" by Indianna Thompson & (Senior Section): "Term & Conditions" by Jasper Reucassel, Marianne Hanna and Alyssa Henry.
This Festival played at Chauvel Paddington on Monday 4 December.
For the annual BLOODFEST Student Horror Film Festival we have 10 finalists for the Festival, and 6 of those being from NHSPA! Finalists films are: "Hymn" by Cori Stanton, Claudette King, Miller Sargeant, "Tzompantli" by Cassidy Schreiber, Rohan Olssen and Dylan Kamaralli-Wilson, "Happy Birthday" by Phoebe Sampson, "The Confrontation" by Nayan Cooper, Christian Graoroski and Jack Clegg, "Valley Of Unrest" by Toby Makeham and Stella O'Brien and "Why So Faceless" by Jim Hopkins.
BLOODFEST screened on 7 December at AFTRS with Croi, Claudette and Miller's film "Hymn" winning the competition for 2023.
