A reference is a formal way of identifying exactly where your in-text citations have come from. A reference is listed at the end of your essay or assignment in a reference list.

A reference list is a list of all the works that you have cited (including quoted or paraphrased) within your paper. It appears after the text of the essay or assignment.
A bibliography is a list of potential works that provide background or further reading.
A bibliography with descriptive notes for each work is called an annotated bibliography.
At SHHS, most of the time you will create a reference list for an assignment. If you are unsure, check with your teacher.
The video below is a 10 minute summary of this webpage and how to use the Referencing Templates that are below the video.
Below is a Referencing Template for Years 7-9 or click here to download.
Tips:
Pay close attention to copying the use of punctuation (full stops, commas, italics etc.)
In the Years 7-9 version, we have simplified APA 7th to four categories of information sources. At times you may need to estimate which category is closest to your information source. Sometimes there will not be a perfect match, and that is okay, just do your best
If you are not able to find all of the required parts of information, eg. the author's name; refer to the second page of the handout for variations.
Below is a Referencing Template for Years 10-12 or click here to download.
Tips:
Pay close attention to copying the use of punctuation (full stops, commas, italics etc.)
In the Years 10-12 version, we have simplified APA 7th to six categories of information sources. At times you may need to estimate which category is closest to your information source. Sometimes there will not be a perfect match, and that is okay, just do your best
If you are not able to find all of the required parts of information, eg. the author's name; refer to the second page of the handout for variations.
Begin the reference list on a new page at the end of your assignment.
Use the title References in bold and centred at the top of the page.
Order your reference list alphabetically by author (or organisation).
The reference list does not count towards your word count.
If you do not include a quote or a paraphrased idea in your essay, do not include it in your reference list. A reference list contains only works that you have cited in your text.
