Course Description:

Skills in performance (individual or group), musicology (researching musical styles), composition (writing music) and Aural (listening skills, will all be developed throughout the two years in an interesting and varied course.

The emphasis is on practical studies, progressing at the students own pace with many opportunities to perform in and out of school. This course is for students who either have limited prior experience with music and or have an interest to specialise in the contemporary and popular field of music.

Main Topics Covered:

Students are to perform regularly, both in and out of class and have a broad knowledge of 3 specialised areas/topics in music (chosen from a list of 21), in terms of Performance, Musicology, Composition and Aural skills. These topics may include Music of Film and Television, 20th Century Stage, Australian Music and Rock Music.

Preliminary course

In the Preliminary course, students study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

Students study three topics in the Preliminary course. Topics are chosen from a list of 21 topics which covers a broad range of styles, periods and genres.

HSC course

In the HSC course, students study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

Students study three topics in the HSC course which are different from those studied in the Preliminary course or two topics which are different from those studied in the Preliminary course and one topic from the Preliminary course in greater depth exploring new repertoire and including a comparative study. Topics are chosen from a list of 21 topics which covers a broad range of styles, periods and genres.

In addition to core studies in performance, composition, musicology and aural, students select three electives from any combination of performance, composition and musicology. These electives must represent each of the three topics studied in the course.

Major Project

In Music 1, students have to prepare for a practical examination. This is externally marked by NESA representatives. The following components are included in the practical exam:

1. Core Performance (20 marks)

2. Electives - You may choose any combination of three electives to the value of (60 marks) A student could choose 3 X performance for electives, or a combination that includes composition and/or musicology.

a. Performance (20 marks) Candidates will perform one piece on an instrument or voice. Maximum performance time will be 5 minutes.

b. Composition (20 marks) Candidates will compose and submit one original composition. Maximum composition length will be 4 minutes.

c. Musicology (20 marks) Candidates will prepare and present one viva voce. Length of viva voce will be 10 minutes.
