2 units for each of Preliminary and HSC Board Developed Course

Course Description:

The Year 11 course is structured to provide students with opportunities to develop and apply their understanding of methods and issues involved in the investigation of modern history. Students investigate various aspects of the modern world, including people, ideas, movements, events and developments.

The Year 12 course is structured to provide students with opportunities to apply their understanding of sources and relevant historiographical issues in the investigation of the modern world.

Main Topics Covered:

Preliminary Course

  • Part I: Investigating Modern History - Includes an introduction to the nature of Modern History with an investigation into two case studies.

  • Part II: Historical Investigation - Students are given the opportunity to develop relevant investigative, research and presentation skills on an area of their own interest.

  • Part III: The Shaping of the Modern World - Students will investigate the impact of the First World War on history in the twentieth

HSC Course

  • Part I: Core Study: Power and Authority in the Modern World 1919-1946

Students investigate the rise of fascist, totalitarian and militarist movements after World War I; what drew people to these movements; the regimes that emerged and ongoing international efforts to achieve collective security.

  • Part II: National Studies

Students investigate key features, individuals, groups, events and developments that shaped the history of a selected nation.

  • Part III: Peace and Conflict

Students investigate key features of the history of one study in peace and conflict.

  • Part IV: Change in the Modern World

Students investigate key features of the history of one case study, focusing on political and social change, and the role of individuals and groups

Particular Course Requirements:

The Preliminary course is a prerequisite for the HSC course.
