Course Description:

The Preliminary course develops students’ knowledge and understanding about the nature and social functions of law and law making, the development of Australian and international legal systems, and the specific nature of the Australian Constitution. The role of the individual is also studied together with the way in which the state imposes its authority on individuals.

The HSC Course investigates Crime, as well as the effectiveness of the legal system through a variety of focus studies which consider how changes in society influence law reform.

Main Topics Covered:

Preliminary Course

  • The Legal System – 40%

  • The Individual and the Law – 30%

  • The law in Practice – 30%

  • A visit to Local and District Courts will be an integral part of the Year 11 course of study and assessment.

HSC Course

  • Crime – 30%

  • Human Rights – 20%

  • Additional Focus Studies – 50%

Two focus studies chosen from Consumers, Global environment and protection, Family, Indigenous peoples, Shelter, Workplace and World order.
