Stage: ES1-S1 KLA: Geography

Lesson 1: What are natural and human features?

Activity 1: Watch the introduction video

Video: Local places (0:46 min)

In your nature journal answer these questions:

  • What natural features did Lisa mention?

  • What human features did Lisa mention?

  • What do you think is the difference between natural and human features?

Activity 2: Have a look outside of your window, or if you are allowed, go outside.

In your nature journal, make a list of:

  • the natural features you can see

  • the human features you can see

Lesson 2: Your special place

Activity 1: Features of your local place

Places have features that are both natural and built.

Think about your local place.

Complete this worksheet to identify what features are found in your local place.

Activity 2: Observe an animal in your local area

Go outside to your garden or go for a walk and spend a couple of minutes looking for animals. You may see birds or lizards, or find a small insect.

Choose one of the animals you have found and watch what it is doing for 5-10mins. (Use a timer to know how long 5-10 minutes is).

In your nature journal, record the activities that your animal was doing.

Make a model of the animal that you have been observing. Your model can be made from natural and/or human created items.

Activity 3: Nature map of your street or home

Draw or create a map of your home. Remember to include what is in your garden or around your home.

Make sure you label different features on your map (for example shed, garden, house). If you live in an apartment, label all the rooms in your home.
