Hands-on activity

Instructions:

  • Take it in turns to spin the spinner and divide the number by the chosen divisor (e.g. 5).

  • Players work out the solution and explain their thinking to their partner.

  • The partner records their thinking and if they agree, the player is able to place one of their counters on the number on the game board, claiming that place.

  • If the number is taken, the player misses a turn.

  • If there are no new counters that can be added to the game board, players have to move an existing counter to a new place.

  • Players win by getting four counters in a row (in any orientation, including a square).

  • Option: you can use 5 or 6 counters, looking for 4 in a row.

What is safety?

Safety means to be protected from being hurt, sick or in danger.

How can we can stay safe at home?

Kitchen safety:

  • Keep medicines and cleaning items up high or in a locked cupboard.


Living room safety:

  • Use power point covers on all the power points (electrical safety).

  • Install a working smoke alarm.

Important! Smoke alarm batteries should be changed every 12 months.


Bathroom safety:

  • An adult should check the water temperature.

  • Place a towel on the floor to soak up any water.

  • Keep electrical equipment in a cupboard away from water.

What is a hazard?

A hazard is an item or a situation with the potential to cause illness, injury, or danger.

For example, a hazard in the bathroom could be water on the floor. This could cause someone to slip over and hurt themselves.

Your task:

  • Complete a safety audit.

  1. Choose a room in your house to focus your audit on (e.g. your bedroom, the kitchen, living room or the bathroom).

  2. Walk around and/or look at the room and identify and describe any hazards.

Hint! Remember, a hazard is an item or a situation with the potential to cause illness, injury or danger.

  1. Record different ways that you could make it safer for someone younger than you. You might like to do this by drawing, writing, or creating a video.

Let's prepare and germinate the seeds in a plastic bag greenhouse!

  • seeds which you just harvested

  • a ziplock bag

  • paper towel

  • sticky tape

  • a pen

  • water (in a spray bottle, if possible)

  • sticky tape.

Growing seeds – part 2

Instructions:

  1. Cut or fold a piece of paper towel to the same shape as the zip lock bag.

  2. Dampen the paper towel with some water.

  3. Place the paper towel flat inside the plastic bag.

  4. Place your seeds in a horizontal line on the paper towel.

  5. Write the names of the seeds on the outside of the plastic bag so you remember what seed are in each bag.

  6. Sticky tape the bag to a sunny window with the seeds facing the sun and watch to see which seeds will grow.
