Duration: 13:28
Instructions:
Bring the charged balloon near to the pieces of tea bag. Observe.
Bring the balloon with pieces of tea bag, near to your clothes – about 1-2 cm (near your belly!) Watch very carefully as you move the balloon closer and farther from your clothes. Observe.
Bring the balloon close to a thin stream of water but do not let it touch the water. Observe.
Bring the charged balloon near to the salt and pepper (about 2-3 cm from the pepper). Observe.
What might make the pieces of tea bag stick to the balloon?
Did large pieces of tea bag do something different to the small pieces?
Why did pepper stick to the balloon but salt did not?
Where else have you seen or felt static electricity?
For those who like a challenge!
Charge your balloon with different materials:
Rub the balloon against different types of clothes or material.
For each material, test the charge by putting the balloon near the pieces of tea bag.
Remember:
Rub each material the same number of times.
Use the same distance between the balloon and the pieces of tea bag.
Observe how many pieces of tea bag stuck to the balloon.
Record this in a drawing or take a picture with a device.
Test 5 or more materials.
Which materials charged the balloon?
Which ones did not?
Can you make a group of materials that did or did not charge the balloon?
