Wifi phone calling

It may be useful to know that it is possible to make phone calls with your mobile phone through the school wifi network. This may be helpful if your mobile phone has very poor signal strength <cough>Optus<cough>.

Exactly how this is done will depend on the brand and model of the particular phone but generally speaking the phone will need to be connected to the school wifi and authenticated, and the wifi calling function of the phone enabled. Putting the phone into flight mode with wifi still turned on should be all that you need to do to call using wifi.

I have tested this using my iPhone on the Telstra network by putting the phone into airplane mode and making sure that wifi is turned on, connected and authenticated. I understand that it is supposed to work on the Optus network as well. I am not sure about other networks but it is worth trying.
