macOS - network queue printing
School-owned eT4L macOS devices are able to be configured to print to network print queues. Network queue printing is generally restricted to staff accounts.
Staff BYOD macOS devices can add network print queues by using the following instructions. As you can see, this is not a trivial process.
Show the Advanced button on the Add Printer System Setting
Select Type: Windows spooler via spoolerss
Install the correct print driver for the target printer. The staff shared printer in the library is a Fuji Xerox ApeosPort-V C6680.
Enter the URL for the desired print queue eg
smb://8334dipsf002.detnsw.win/8334_cr2009_p1 (this is the staff shared printer in the library)
Enter a suitable name and location for this printer and select the correct print driver.
macOS - Bonjour printing
Some printers have Bonjour discovery enabled which means that macOS devices are able to discover and configure these printers automatically. This is not recommended as there is no print security and nothing to stop students from sending print jobs to these devices.
iOS
A very small number of printers have AirPrint enabled. This means that iPads are able to use these printers without restriction. Not recommended.
ChromeOS
We are currently investigating a way for specific ChromeOS (Chromebook) devices to print to specific printers. More on this later.
