Choosing a network printer in NSWDoE is not the same as setting up your printer at home. If you try and search for network printer using Windows Settings, you will be presented with almost every network printer in the state!
Some school computers will have one or more printers automatically allocated. These are network server print queues. Students generally do not have access to school network print queues. Windows users (school-allocated and BYOD) can choose an alternate print queue from the following network location:
\\8334dip000sf002.detnsw.win\ or use the Shortcut on the teacher desktop.
From the desktop, click on: Shortcuts=>Staff=>Staff network printers
Double click on the desired printer queue. You may find it easier to look at the window in list view rather than icon view so that you can see the printer friendly names.
It is recommended for Windows computers to use the network printer queue as this will load the correct drivers for that printer. You may be asked for your DET credentials to connect to a network printer queue.
When your password is changed, you will need to enter this updated password in order to continue printing. Your computer MAY automatically pop up a prompt, or you may have to update this password manually. For macOS this is done by opening Keychain Access - look for an item called 8334dip000sf002.detnsw.win.
Most school printers have a label showing the print queue name, for example 8334_CR2009_P2 (this is the staff shared printer in the library)
(FYI, decode this name as follows: 8334 - Yass High School; CR2009 - C-block, level 2, room 9; P1 - printer 1 in that location).
It is also possible to print direct to most network printers using the IP address of the printer however this is NOT recommended as there is no print security and nothing to stop students printing in this way.
I created a quick screen recording showing the steps in choosing a school network printer. The sound quality is not the best but I hope this is useful to somebody.
