How Grandma Poss turned the Wombats Blue
By Ms Hopkins
When Grandma Poss was a little baby possum she was out looking for some food and came across a mob of Aboriginal people at their campfire. One of the men played a didgeridoo and another man was wearing a special head dress. He was a healing man and knew special bush magic.
Baby Poss ran through the special gathering and was hit by the magic of the healing man. From that day, baby Poss had special powers.
Poss grew up to be a very clever possum and had a wonderful time helping the other bush animals and playing fun tricks on them. As time passed, Poss had baby possums of her own and then they had babies too. She became known as Grandma Poss, a kind, caring, funny old possum who knew bush magic. She used this magic to turn the kookaburra’s pink and wombats blue. She even made her grandson Hush INVISIBLE!
Our children in Year 1 and 2 will have different writing skills. Some will write one sentence, others will write a few sentences, some will write a paragraph or a page. A great way to engage children in the writing process is to have them tell you how Grandma Poss changed the wombats blue. Let the children write to their ability and encourage them to stretch out words and sounds to spell unknown words. Expect ‘miss-takes’. Most importantly enjoy the creation of ideas and the story making process and have FUN!!!
Daily warm up: Start at any number between 1 and 30 and count up as far as you can. Then sing along to our song of the week.
Choose a number. Use words and pictures to create an A4 poster showing everything you know about your chosen number.
Place three to five handfuls of (counters, Lego, toothpicks, pegs, icy-pole sticks) on the floor. Using plastic cups, count 10 counters into each container. Describe the number in tens and ones. How many counters are there in this group altogether? How did you work it out?
Throw a dice and pick up that number of icy-pole sticks, toothpicks, pencils, pegs, etc. When you have 10 or more single sticks, make a bundle of 10. When you get three bundles of 10 (30) you have ‘made thirty’.
Select a target number (choose a number between 1 and 10). Roll a dice, child says the number on the dice and counts how many to get to their chosen number. Can you choose a higher target number and count how many?
Go to PE with Jo and choose a daily PE activity.
Make a healthy sandwich, wrap or salad for lunch. What ingredients did you use and which of the five food groups did the ingredients come from?
