AWEsome Programme
The AWEsome programme is designed to integrate outdoor learning, adventure sports and school based learning to support delivery of curriculum outcomes, specifically focused on Literacy/ STEM/ Health & Wellbeing.
The programmes are bespoke and tailor made to each school, designed to deliver educational outcomes and key priorities themed around a text the pupils will cover in class. Active travel (cycling/walking) is used as the preferred method of transport to enhance place based learning in the local area. The programmes are designed to inspire adventure and responsible access to local green and blue space, enhancing the Learning for Sustainability approach to life, learning & work.
Priority will be given to:
*P6’s
*Schools who fill in a detailed request form
*Applications for whole year groups
*Schools who have Outdoor Learning as an approach to curriculum delivery in their School Improvement Plan/ Curriculum Rationale
*Pupils who have achieved Bikeability Level 2, through the Outdoor Learning Service
The programme:
Part A – In school lessons delivered by an Outdoor Learning, in partnership with class teachers, directly relating to agreed experiences and outcomes. All lessons are linked to the text, chosen in conjunction with the class teacher – There is no cost to the school or pupils for Part A
Part B – Two days of adventure activities consisting of a short journeys (active travel) and adventurous activities – There is a cost to the school/parents for Part B
Part C – A half day review, back in school, reviewing and reflecting on the learning that has taken place – There is no cost to the school or pupils for Part C
Activities will depend on the location of the school. Activities can be changed at any moment due to a variety of reasons – weather, group abilities, staff etc. Please ensure that all parents/carers/pupils/staff are aware of possible last minute programme changes.
Programmes will run from approximately 9am until the end of the school day.
Activities could include:
Mountain Biking/ Trail cycling
Paddlesports – Canoeing / Kayaking / Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP)
River Exploration
Orienteering
Tree climb/Slack line
Bushcraft/ Fire
Adventure Journey & Navigation Challenge
Problem solving and Team Building Challenges
Coasteering/ Beach Explore
Rock Climb & Scramble

Groups:
Group size is approx.10 pupils per group and a maximum capacity of 6 groups per week. If you’re a big school you may be accommodated over more than one week.
Cost:
2 day AWEsome programme £62 per pupil (Academic Year 2024/25)
2 day AWEsome programme £65 per pupil (Academic Year 2025/26)
N.B. The overall programme cost is subsidised by East Lothian Council. The parental contribution for the activity days, in addition to curricular content, is only covering the costs of additional staff employed to deliver the activities.
**Schools will not be charged until AFTER the event and only for those pupils who took part**
What the school need to provide:
* a link teacher who will support delivery of the classroom aspect of the programme
* a member of staff (or volunteer helper) for each group attending, the minimum staffing ratio is 1:10
* ensure pupils turn up for the activity days with suitable clothing/ equipment/ a pack-lunch/snacks for the day and any medication needed

EVOLVE – this planning and approval form must be started as soon as your booking is confirmed and submitted well in advance of the activities N.B. Select Multi-activity when asked for the adventurous activities. Complete an Essential Information form
Programmes are always flexible and may need to be changed at the very last minute depending on weather conditions, tides, staffing, group ability, etc. Alternate activities that form part of the overall programme will be provided and similar outcomes achieved. We will do our best to inform you of these changes ASAP but in reality this may be the morning of, or possibly even during the activity. This is the nature of Outdoor Learning (especially in Scotland). Please make sure your staff, children and parents are aware of this.
