The Timber Products course is available at Accredited (A) or Modified (M) levels and prepares students to work confidently with hand tools, machinery, and timber. Students gain knowledge and experience designing projects, engaging with the design process, and selecting timber for use. They acquire skills in using hand tools, machinery, and technology, such as laser cutters, to produce products.
This unit introduces students to essential timber properties and design theories. Students practice safe workshop procedures and master specific hand and power tools for timberwork. They construct joints and follow designated designs to complete assigned projects. Students also gain versatile problem-solving and communication skills.
This unit builds advanced workshop skills using timber and alternative materials for targeted manufacturing contexts. Students assess timber products from selected manufacturing processes. They acquire technical knowledge, product specifications, and manufacturing methods, including the use of jigs. Students evaluate context and timber type to determine optimal joinery techniques. They develop skills such as digital proficiency, reading plans and drawings, accurate measurement, scale, and material justification.
This unit centres on product creation through a structured design process. Students apply sustainable and ethical workshop procedures and strengthen digital competence by interpreting plans. They analyse material properties for design brief requirements, select suitable materials, and calculate production and labour costs. Students refine their communication skills, including active listening, feedback evaluation, and collaboration.
In this unit, students execute a design process to develop or adapt a project to meet specific requirements. Using a project schedule, they oversee all phases from concept to completion. Students hone manual and digital design and planning abilities. They select materials, finishes, and methods based on project criteria, and address safety risks during workshop construction. Communication skills include documenting and evaluating production techniques.
