A study of business enables students to appreciate and experience the wide range of occupations that are available in the business world. The course also encourages students to consider creating their own employment and to develop an entrepreneurial attitude towards their future.
Each of the four units provides an opportunity to study potential business opportunities in the Australian economy and the expanding export opportunities in the global economy. This course provides an excellent background for any business/commerce course at university or another tertiary institution, as well as preparing students for the workforce.

Business (T/A/M) is available as a Minor or Major, and some units may be combined with some units from Economics or Accounting to form a Commerce Major, Major/Minor or Double Major – restrictions apply, so please ensure you talk to the Executive Teacher.
Year 11 Semester 1 students choose Unit 1
This unit examines the importance of business to our society, the various classifications of business types, and the legal structures of businesses, such as sole traders, partnerships, companies, and franchises. It involves examining the concepts and principles of entrepreneurship and ethics as they apply in the business environment. After discussing the importance of small businesses, we shift focus to how businesses can expand globally and the issues they face.
This unit examines the importance of understanding a business's target market and the role marketing plays in achieving success. The unit explores the various types of media and how businesses can utilise these to gain a competitive advantage. The unit is delivered through a combination of theory and practical exercises, culminating in the students developing a marketing plan for a business.
This unit emphasises contemporary issues in financial management. While the emphasis is on financial management in the organisational context, personal financial management issues are also included to improve the students' financial literacy. After a discussion of the importance of financial management, business planning and regulation are introduced, and students complete a business plan based on their own ideas.
This unit examines how staff management aligns with the business's goals. It examines the different ways a business can build a culture that attracts, motivates, and strengthens employees' commitment and performance. It examines various theories of leadership styles and of managing change within organisations of all sizes.
