And so he became...the Mahatma!

The DPS Varanasi, Nashik and Lava Nagpur family, came together to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi...a day to celebrate virtues of Satya and Ahimsa….in a novel way.

Every journey has a beginning...so does the life journey of Mohan to Mahatma. At a time when we are confronted with synthetic role models, the story of a real man, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a young, unsure, timid boy who becomes Mahatma Gandhi was brought to life….

Storytelling is an art form that is as old as human existence. Vikram Sridhar, a leading storyteller of India believes in performing stories. He is dedicated to keeping the tradition of telling stories to a live audience alive.

He made the audience walk through some of the milestones of the Mohandas to Mahatma Journey.

Vikram stringed the pearls from Mahatma’s life into his favorite bhajan ‘Vaishnav Jan to…’ and offered a full panorama of M K Gandhi’s journey, a journey that began with Mohandas …..…...the events, the people around him who inspired and motivated him.

The session was a beautiful amalgamation of History, Ideology and Humanism…..anchored by anecdotes that highlighted the events and people that steered Mahatma Gandhi’s phenomenal journey. Thillaiyadi Valliammai, Mahadev Desai, Shyamji Krishna Verma, Shri Manoharji Diwan and Parchure Shastri, each person left a mark on the life of Gandhiji.

It was a wonderful initiative by the DPS, Varanasi, Nashik and Lava Nagpur that brought History alive for the memorable celebration of the journey of an iconic personality who showed mankind the way out of the destructive side of human nature.

The event came to an end with a vote of thanks by the host, Ms. Rajashree Vaidya, Counsellor, DPS Lava, Nagpur.

झंडा देता वीर को, मरणोत्तर सम्मान |

इसकी रक्षा के लिए, दे देते जो प्राण ||

नादानी का था परिणाम, सत्यता से था अनजान,

पिता से बोला था एक झूठ, अपने कृत्य से मन था रूठ,

आत्मग्लानि से भरकर, किया दृढ निश्चय इससे उबरकर,

अपराध अपना स्वीकार किया और जीवन का सबक लिया,

सत्य का मार्ग अपनाया, ‘प्रेम’, हिंसा से ज्यादा असरदार है,

यही बात लोगों को समझाया !

साउथ अफ्रीका की है बात, वर्ण भेद था हर ओर व्याप्त,

अश्वेत और था बेमेल, रेल की प्रथम श्रेणी से दिया धकेल,

अन्याय के विरुद्ध सत्याग्रह चलाया,

अंग्रेज़ी साम्राज्य में देशवासियों का मान बढ़ाया,

श्रेष्ठ थी वह आत्मा बैरिस्टर से महात्मा !

रौलेट एक्ट के विरोध पर जनसामान्य एकत्र था,

नरसंहार करने के लिए जनरल डायर आतुर था,

इस उपद्रव ने स्वतंत्रता को नई चुनौती दी,

विचलित हो बापू ने असहयोग आन्दोलन की रणनीति तैयार की,

रह लिए गुलाम, बहुत दिन तक , अब नहीं गुलाम रहेंगे हम,

गूँज रही है अब तक कानों में चीखे उस अत्याचार की ,

बैसाखी के पावन पर्व पर हुए उस नृशंस नरसंहार की !

‘खादी’ उद्योग के रूप में देश की आर्थिक ताकत कहलाई,

आत्मनिर्भरता, सर्वसुलभ रोजगार और तात्कालिक राहत बन ,

अंग्रेज़ी सल्तनत की बुनियाद हिलाई,

चरखा अहिंसक, सूक्ष्म राजनीतिक साधन था,

व्यापारिक युद्ध का नहीं बल्कि शांति का दामन था,

माँ खादी की चादर दे दो मैं गाँधी बन जाऊँगा,

सभी मित्रों के बीच बैठकर रघुपति राघव गाऊँगा !

नमक सत्याग्रह पर सविनय अवज्ञा चलाया था,

साबरमती से दांडी गाँव तक पैदल मार्च जो आया था,

नमक और भारत छोड़ो आन्दोलन को फिर अपनाया था,

शामिल होकर गोलमेज में, भारत का हक बतलाया था,

सारे नेता जेलों में थे, कर आज़ादी का गान रहे,

हो प्राण निछावर अपने पर, इस मातृभूमि का मान रहे,

भारत छोड़ो का नारा अब, घर-घर से उठता आता था,

इस नारे को सुन-सुनकर अब, अंग्रेज़ी राज थर्राता था,

सत्य-अहिंसा के बल पर तुमने काज सवारा,

युगों-युगों तक अमिट रहेगा ‘बापू’ नाम तुम्हारा !

आप पिता हैं हम सब तेरे ऋणी सपूत |

चरखा पूनी रामधुन और कातते सूत ||
