Profile of Mr Lim Hock Chee
林福星先生
Mr Lim Hock Chee was born in Singapore in 1961. He founded the Sheng Siong chain of supermarkets together with his elder brother, Mr Lim Hock Eng, and younger brother, Mr Lim Hock Leng. Established in 1985, Sheng Siong Supermarket Pte Ltd is Singapore’s third largest retailer in Singapore today, operating from over 70 locations here. Sheng Siong Supermarket Pte Ltd’s parent company, Sheng Siong Group Ltd (昇菘集团), was listed on the Mainboard of the Singapore Exchange in August 2011 and its market capitalisation now exceeds S$1.3 billion.
Being a hands-on person, Mr Lim Hock Chee has always preferred practical over theory. He majored in mechanical engineering when he was studying in a local vocational institute (now known as the Institute of Technical Education).
In 1985, Mr Lim Hock Chee and his brothers entered the fiercely competitive retail industry by setting up the first “Sheng Siong Supermarket” on the ground floor of a block of HDB units. At around that time, their family business of pig farming was forced to come to an end because the Singapore government was phasing out land-intensive pig farms to make way for urbanisation.
After years of hard work, Sheng Siong gradually becomes a household name associated with value-for-money quality necessities and warm and friendly service. "Sheng Siong" has been a "Superbrand" since 2008.
Despite a busy schedule, Mr Lim Hock Chee contributes time, effort and resources to the community, and participates in grassroots activities. He was awarded the Pingat Bakti Marsyarakat Public Service Medal by the Singapore President in 2006. The very next year, he was awarded the 10-year long service award by the Prime Minister’s Office. In 2014, he was conferred The Public Service Star (Bintang Bakti Masyarakat) award. He is currently the Chairman of Marsiling Citizens’ Consultative Committee. In addition, he chairs the Qihua Primary School’s Advisory Committee.
As Sheng Siong Supermarket’s Managing Director and Sheng Siong Group’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Lim represented Sheng Siong and joined the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) as a corporate member. Since 2010, Mr Lim has served as a Council Member of SCCCI and is elected as the vice-president of the 61st Council since 2022.
Mr Lim Hock Chee is married with four children. His hobbies include reading books on strategies and philosophies.
