A strong transformation plan unifies the vision for technology integration and device maintenance with the school improvement plan or goals for the year.
All guiding questions are aligned to the element criteria located in the Portfolio Guide. Use the questions to guide your reflection on the artifacts to narrate your journey on the goals.
Each document was created in collaboration with committees such as School Site Council, School Decision Making Council, English Learner Advisory Committee, the Instructional Leadership Team, WASC Accreditation Committee, and all teaching faculty members. All committees have members that include teachers, administrators, students, parents, and other school employees. Opportunity to modify these documents are given during monthly meetings, common planning time, and professional develpment days.
South Gate Middle School continues to provide all stakeholders with the tools and knowledge necessary to leverage technology aand successfully meet program goals through professional development opportunities, in class demonstrations, parent engagment opportunities as outline in the Parent and Family Engagement Policy, and the availability of information through several communication platforms (Schoology, social media, email, ConnectEd messages, flyers, weekly updates, Coffee with the Principal, ELAC meetings, among others.
Modifications to the student centered goals will be made if necessary.
Element 1: Leadership Team
A clear shared vision with goals for the school, its culture, and teaching and learning
A cross-functional leadership team with a diverse group of district and school leadership and stakeholders (including but not limited to district-level IT, curriculum and family engagement leaders, and school-level admin, coaches, teachers, and student leaders)
Opportunities for ongoing support for the leadership team, including professional conferences, webinars, online communities of practice, etc.
Modeling of strong leadership by adopting and utilizing powerful and innovative technology strategies
Action Step 1: Instructional Leadership Team (Coordinators, Instructional Coaches, Department Chairs, and Administrators) will continue to meet weekly to collaborate around leveraging technology across all content areas to inform instruction through professional developments aligned to PLP goals.
Action Step 2: Instructional Leadership Team, Professional Learning Community Leaders, and Teacher Leader Corps members will receive TIM-O training, receive TIM Tools Resources, and engage in peer observation to determine and improve upon areas of strength and need.
Action Step 3: Instructional leaders and teachers will be given the opportunity to attend district professional developments, in- and out-of-state conferences(CUE, ISTE, CMC, etc.), and other professional learning opportunities that empower and encourage the implementation of technology in all learning experiences. Funding will be provided through Title I, TSP, and SENI funds.
Element 2: Tranformation Plan
Aligns technology integration, school, and district goals and initiatives to increase powerful learning for students.
The transformation plan is shared with teachers, families, students, and other stakeholders, keeping equity at the forefront of the plan.
Flexibility to adapt and change the Transformation Plan as needed, including having an ongoing feedback loop to measure and calibrate the impact and success of the plan.
Action Step 1: School program goals (VILS, LinkedLearning, Dual Language Program, STEM SLC, and STEM Magnet, AVID, Gifted, and English Learner) will be developed and revised through the collaboration of faculty members, parents, and students as outlined in the Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy to leverage technology in all learning experiences and communications. Program goals will be revised at monthly iTeam (STEAM, STEM, AVID, Dual Language, Linked Learning) meetings and bi-monthly ELAC parent meetings. All faculty members will have 2 Professional Development dates in February and March to make revisions to the school’s Single Plan for Student Achievement for the 2022-23 school year.
Action Step 2: All school communications, school program goals, parent engagement policies, technology policies, and learning opportunities will be available to all stakeholders on the school’s webpage (English and Spanish)
Action Step 3: Engage families in school decision-making and digital learning experiences during monthly Coffee with the Principal meetings via Zoom.
Element 3: Ongoing Professional Learning
Providing access to instructional coaches that support teachers in technology integration
Identifying, showcasing, and leveraging the expertise of teacher leaders
Providing ongoing professional development opportunities at the district, school, and peer-led levels
Using concrete experiences and activities that are explicitly linked to curriculum teachers use, their classroom/school context, and their individual needs and interests
Action Step 1: School will continue to fund a full time VILS Instructional Coach position during Year 3 and 4 funded through Title I funding. VILS Coach will continue to engage in Technology Integration Matrix aligned observations of at least 80 percent of teachers and provide teachers with actionable feedback, resources, and support to enhance their instruction with the use of technology. VILS Coach will engage in Cognitive Coaching Cycles and TIM-C Cycles with identified teachers (at least 25 percent of teachers based on TIM-Observations, ILT Meeting Feedback and PD Reflection Feedback) across content areas, and design and facilitate ongoing content specific and schoolwide leveraging technology professional development for 100 percent of staff.
Action Step 2: Teacher Leaders Corps will meet every month to create, revise, and facilitate TLC lead professional development that leverages technology in all learning experiences. TLC-led professional development will happen during District PD Tuesday banked time (non-paid) and X-time paid “Tech Tuesday”/Saturday opportunities.
Action Step 3: Teacher Leader Corps will develop a Teacher Technology Needs Survey, gather and analyze data from the survey and TIM-O observations reports, and curate resources to provide individualized and school-wide support to all instructional staff.
Element 4: Consistent Access
An accessible and robust plan for repairs and replacements that is clear and known by all teachers, students, and families
Ongoing digital citizenship training and topics based on student access in school and at home
Designated school IT support contact who manages and maintains device support and inventory, and coordinates with district IT contacts for school needs
A student tech team of student leaders who assist with first-tier device issues and can help develop and deliver training
Action Step 1: School will fund a designated school IT support contact who manages and maintains device support and inventory, and coordinates with district IT contacts for school needs to be funded through Title I funds. IT support person will make sure all students and faculty members have a functional device available to them at all times.
Action Step 2: School will engage in digital citizenship lessons curated by the VILS Coach, Student Tech Team, and Creative Communication Team during Advisory throughout the school year. All students will participate in Digital Citizenship Week and the district’s ITI Digital Citizenship Showcase.
Action Step 3: All stakeholders will receive information on device repair and replacement procedures throughout the year through presentations, school parent events (Back to School Night, parent Conferences, Coffee with the Principal), and Student Tech Team announcements. All information will also be available on the school’s website.
Element 5: Family Engagement
Providing multiple opportunities for families to stay informed and involved in their child’s use of technology
Promoting equity in parent and family engagement by delivering the information in multiple formats and languages
Providing opportunities for engagement in areas such as digital citizenship, help desk information for broken devices, community-building, etc.
Action Step 1: School will provide parents and community members with informational meetings/presentations in English and Spanish during 6th Grade Orientation, Back to School Night, Parent Conferences, Open House, and Coffee with the Principal to inform families on technology use, responsibilities, resources, and implementation of VILS and Practioner Schools 7.0 goals.
Action Step 2: Provide community members with workshops through Title I funds to increase technology capacity and increase parent involvement in student technology use. Workshops include Google Suite products, word processing, spreadsheets, using Parent portal/Schoology to monitor student achievement, Digital Citizenship, among others. Workshops (once COVID restrictions are lifted) will be offered monthly through the Family Center in collaboration between the Parent School Representative and Title I Coordinator. Parent portal workshops/assistance will be provided during Open House, Back 2 School Night, and Parent Conferences. The Attendance and Technology offices are available on a daily basis to assist parents with the Parent Portal.
Action Step 3: Utilize Viking Student Tech Team-led video announcements, South Gate Middle School website, social media (Facebook and Instagram), Schoology Parent and Student Outreach group, and ConnectEd messages to engage students and community members in school site initiatives, events, and announcements. Topics that announcements will cover include best digital citizenship practices, fostering digital well-being, sharing useful iPads tips and tricks to create increased access to content, processes for reporting and replacing broken devices, data usage monitoring, updating iPads, sharing iPad creation tools, Google AI experiments to engage in, and empowering device ownership and pride across campus. All resources are provided in English and Spanish as outlined in the Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy.
Element 6: Equity as a Mindset
Connecting with the school community to understand and collect information on the needs in technology use, knowledge, or concerns, and using that data to help identify the indicators of diversity in your student population
Participating in a mindset shift as a school to ensure all stakeholders are engaged in a growth mindset and that all students’ voices are being heard
Opportunities for additional resources and program support for students from marginalized communities (based on gender, socioeconomic status, race, ELL, IEP, sexual orientation, physical ability, nationality, or other distinctions unique to their district context)
Action Step 1: Continue to provide all students with equitable and inclusive access to STEM pathways and resources through partnerships with Project Lead the Way, USC RPL, LinkedLearning, ELAC Robotics program, Google’s VIVA Technology Program, Northrop Grumman, Two-Bit Circus, SeaPearch, and South Gate Community of Schools collaboration.
Action Step 2: Instructional out-of-classroom personnel and TLC members will continue to engage stakeholders in meaningful professional development opportunities that leverage technology to increase student voice and choice through a focus on fostering Creative Communicators (LDE ISTE focus). As a continued focus for the district, monthly professional development opportunities will also be available to all stakeholders through the South Gate Community of Schools and Local District East. Topics include Soundtrap, Book Creator, Adobe Cloud Express, WeVideo, Canva, and HyperDocs.
Action Step 3: South Gate Middle School will continue to increase the number of members in our Viking Student Team and continue to include all grade levels, genders, and diverse ethnic backgrounds. The Student Tech team will continue to leverage technology, build capacity, support all stakeholders with technology integration, and promote a learning environment of collaboration, exploration, and creativity. They will continue to create video tutorials, video announcements, manage the Technology Assistance Request Form, and assist teachers and students with digital tools such as Book Creator, Soundtrap, Adobe Spark, Canva, among others. Tech Team members will continue to make presentations and random iPad checks to promote student ownership and digital wellness.
