A cross-functional leadership team sets a clear vision for the school, its culture, and what teaching
and learning look like before putting technology in classrooms.
All guiding questions are aligned to the element criteria located in the Portfolio Guide. Use the questions to guide your reflection on the artifacts to narrate your journey on the goals.
How does the campus leadership team model and collaborate with each other to support campus goals?
Our Instructional Leadership Team meets every Monday to create goals and discuss progress in meeting these goals for the various programs on campus (Dual Language Program, Magnet Program, Special Educational Program, LinkedLearning, WASC, VILS, District mandated and School Lead Professional Development).
Monthly meetings are also held with our Instructional Cadre (PLC leads, coordinators, and instructional coaches) where we look at progress in meeting goals set in our Single Plan for Student Achievement, WASC plan, and District Instructional Plan. Instructional needs are further assessed to create or revise our Action Steps for achieving set goals. Topics for Professional Development are also chosen based on instructional needs.

How does the district leadership team support innovation and collaboration?
The Instructional Technology Initiative Department in LAUSD provides at least one Professional Development for all Technology Coaches (VILS and ITFs) per month. The department partners with media companies such as KQED, PearDeck, Google, Soundtrap, GoGuardian, and Amazon BootUp, among others, to provide innovative digital tools and strategies that target the ISTE standards for Empowered Learners (part of the Practitioner Schools 7.0 initiative). In addition, the ITI department also provides monthly Virtual Connect meetings designed for Empowered Learners Teams established at each participating school site.
What evidence do you have that supports policies for teacher and student device usage?
The leadership team has also created Google forms that contain device usage policies that every staff member and student/parent must read and sign (available in English and Spanish) before being assigned a device. All students participate in an "iPad Norms" presentation through their PE classes within the first week of School. A second presentation is given to all students with the collaboration of the Technology Department and the Intervention Office (Deans, Positive Climate Advocate) on student device responsibility that is based on the LAUSD's Responsible Use Policy.

Our Technology Office has also created a guide for our staff with various options for classroom device distribution, device care, and device troubleshooting options for all stakeholders.
How have you implemented best practices gained from leadership calls, national calls, and IT calls? Can you point to ways in which you've modified your PL and IT practices as a result of reflection and learning from others?
South Gate Middle School is constantly revising our professional learning plans to meet the instructional needs of our students. Implementation of new learning occurs through collaboration with LAUSD C7 coaches (bi-weekly meetings), LAUSD VILS Coaches, and ITF (Monthly IT Convenings, Monthly ITI Connected Learners' Sessions), and VILS-sponsored conferences/meetings. This collaboration has resulted in sharing best practices in various aspects of technology integration at South Gate MS such as professional development, device distribution, troubleshooting systems, leveraging student teach teams and Teacher Leader Corps, and increasing parent engagement.
Our Teacher Leader Corps consists of 11 members. Each department (Math, ELA, Science, History, and Electives) and grade level is represented in our TLC with levels of technology use ranging from novice to expert.
TLC members meet every last Thursday of the month to discuss technology implementation, progress in meeting our PLP goals, and create monthly technology training for staff members. All trainings are co-facilitated by TLC members.
TLC members also have an open door policy for other teachers to observe their classrooms when implementing technology.

TLC members create and administer a Teacher Technology Needs Survey once every semester. The results allow the TLC to determine future PD topics and prioritize schoolwide, departmental, and individualized areas of need.

Self Reflection on the Element: Aligning
Strengths: Our TLC and leadership team continues to collaborate and facilitate professional learning experiences to continue to foster empowered learners and creative communicators by leveraging technology schoolwide. Technology is leveraged to give students the voice and choice they need to successfully navigate through a 21st-century learning environment. We continue to gather feedback from all stakeholders to continually improve and refine schoolwide goals.
Next Steps: We will continue to improve communication among all stakeholders, and allow all stakeholders to clearly identify members who can assist in meeting their instructional needs.
