To close the digital learning gap, we must make sure that students have access to technology and high-speed internet outside of school.
All guiding questions are aligned to the element criteria located in the Portfolio Guide.
We currently have 22 students who are day users. A few of those students are in the process of completing all necessary forms to obtain an iPad. The majority of the 22 have declined the option to take the iPad home. However, they do have a device available for them in the classroom.
Our current lost or stolen count that has not been recovered is 22. Students and parents can no longer file a police report through LAUSD PD if a device is stolen on campus. Per LAUSD policy, we cannot charge any parent who cannot afford a replacement. Thus, we have not received compensation for most of the devices that have been lost or stolen.
Morning announcements are now made every Monday and Wednesday during advisory. During these announcement, student tech team members remind students to keep their devices in their backpack and not to leave them unattended. We will begin deploying Student Tech Team memebrs to do random weekly device checks through advisory.
We will increase emphasis on device security, care, and digital citizenship in the Spring semester through student led presentations, posters, social media, and awareness for parents.
Parents and students receive information on device safety, security, and digital citizenship at the beginning of the school year through their PE class and Back to School Night. Monthly updates are also provided at Coffee with the Principal.
In addition, prior to receiving a device, students and parents must watch a Digital Citizenship video and complete a Digital Citizenship Quiz.
All students participate in Digital Citizenship Week in October. Each grade level completed 6 lessons. Our student leadership team created a Kahoot game where students won prizes for answering digital citizenship questions.
The Student Tech Team will begin making presentations and device checks during Advisory to promote student ownership of devices and to help students monitor their data usage. They will also address the increase of lost/stolen devices. The school leadership team will create and implement a more effective system to increase student ownership.
South Gate Middle School has continued to emphasize great Difital Citizenship for all stakeholders. In collaboration with the Deans, VILS Coach, Technology Coordinator, and Student Tech Team, a second presenatation was conducted to estavblish the importance of device safety and responsible use. Students have also created books through BookCreator to bring awareness to proper use of social media sites.
Community members were also offered various workshops that cover social emotional well-being and the impact of social media on children.
Our Technology Room consists of the Technology Coordinator, VILS Coach, IT Assistant, and Student Tech team (Advisory period only). Students will fill out the Technology Request form. Members of the technology room will assess the repairs needed, and will determine if there is a fee that the student will pay. Fees for repairs or lost devices/accessories are outlined in the iPad norms presentation. If a fee is imposed, students will pay at the student store, bring the receipt to the technology room, and will receive new device/accessory.
As evident in the Teacher Technology Survey, over 70% of our teachers are requiring students to use their devices beyond the classroom several times a week. Our Yearbook class also uses iPads to take pictures of school events and will begin creating videos to include in the school yearbook (QR code will be placed on yearbook pages). Students are increasing their use of iPads to cultivate creativity which is evident in the projects that are completed.
South Gate Middle School continues to follow and emphasize our school wide technology systems for device safety and responsible use. The Technology office and Student Tech Team continue to monitor the Devie/App troubleshoot form for all stakeholders. Communications are sent to parents with the consequences for students of not adhering to our Responsbile Use Policy and the monetary fines associated with damaged or lost devices/accesories.
8th grade students will return their issued devices on or before June 3rd. As per policy, they will not be able to participate in the Culmination ceremony if not cleared by our Technology Coordinator. A device health check will be conducted during homeroom for all 6th and 7th grade teachers prior to the end of the school year.
Our Student Tech Team participates in ongoing learning sessions to increase their knowledge of both iPads and Chromebooks. . They learn how to assist with both hardware and software issues that stakeholders have with technology. Members are empowered as campus leaders who advocate for their peers and community. They pilot digital programs, create and share resources to inspire students to leverage technology across campus. In addition, STT members are included in our bi-weekly morning announcements.
Our STT is available during the Advisory period (30 minutes per day). Members have created a QR code that is available in every classroom for any support students and teachers might need. The QR code directs them to a Google form where they can specify the help that is needed. Members access the form responses, determine who is best at resolving specific issues, and deploy to resolve that issue.
Our STT is constantly learning how to repair all devices at South Gate Middle School. They have been part of video conferences with other VILS Schools to learn how to use electronics such as the Sphero balls. Our STT then creates videos to support their peers with basic troubleshooting and provides tutorials to build student capacity around iPad tips and tricks.
During Spring Semester, our Student Tech Team has continued to assist with IT during Advisory on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. They continue to monitor our App and Device Troubleshooting request form and provide support for our random Device Health Checks.
We are excited that our Student Tech Team will be expanding for the 2022-23 school year. We will now have a dedicated elective for our STT/Media Club. Applications have been distributed and require teacher recommendations.
