Learner-informed knowledge is a prerequisite for integrating technology in an inclusive way so that students from all communities can effectively use it to achieve their goals.
Student achievement has increased for many students due to numerous initiatives CSK has implemented this school year. One of which is the VILS program. Students having consistent access to technology has increased standards mastery even when absent. Teachers are learning how to utilize technology to reach students when they are unable to attend class. This ensures students do not miss a step if they have to miss class for any reason. Students are given multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery of standards and, most importantly, how they leverage technology to learn.
CSK's community is a low-income neighborhood that has been described as a "food and financial desert" that lies in the heart of the westside of Atlanta, Georgia. The students are in need of many resources and technology is major one. The low-income status of the community contributes to the large digital gap our students face. The VILS program provides devices for households that would not have one otherwise. Some of our students are multilingual. To ensure transparency to all families, every communication is available in Spanish and we have two translators on staff to assist with parent conferences and in-face interactions. All programs and opportunities are available to all students no matter their background.
CSK's JROTC is one of the most popular on campus and it is very active in the community. Our students are afforded a plethora of community service projects through our JROTC program. The VILS Coach and Sargent Major at the school work closely to coordinate events and solicit volunteers.
