Welcome to Canvas, our chosen learning management system at Denver Christian Middle School! Canvas is designed to enhance your child's educational experience by providing a centralized, easy-to-use platform where students can access their courses, submit assignments, and engage in learning anytime, anywhere. Whether you're a seasoned Canvas user or new to this tool, we're excited to support you in making the most of this dynamic educational resource.
After your account is set up, we do recommend going into the notifications and adjusting those as needed. Parent Observer accounts default to many notifications as “on” - this will quickly fill your email inbox.
Additionally, we do recommend you download the “Parent” app. This link can be found below.
Canvas is a great tool to keep track of your child’s learning. We do, however, recommend that you continue to encourage your child to own their own learning.

Line = Assignment was created, NOT yet graded. Make sure it is turned in and submitted.
EX = Excused assignment; this assignment does not factor into your overall grade

You have probably been receiving quite a few email notifications from Canvas about various items in your child's courses (grades posted, upcoming assignments, changes due dates, etc.). The default setting is to have most of these turned on. However, you can go into your Canvas account and set up the notifications to your specifications. For example, you may want to have only a weekly summary of upcoming assignments but be notified immediately of grade changes.
Canvas includes a set of default notification preferences you can receive for the courses you are observing. Notifications are sent to Canvas as specified in your account User Settings. However, you can change the default settings by setting your own notification preferences. These preferences only apply to you; they are not used to control how course updates are sent to the student you are observing.
Some notifications may not apply to the observer role. To learn more about each notification, default settings, and notification triggers, view the Canvas Notifications PDF.
Notifications are sent as one of four delivery types: notify me right away, daily summary, weekly summary, or don't send. If you change a setting, the change is made immediately to your account.
Notification settings apply to all courses you are observing; you cannot change settings for individual courses.
You can reply directly to email notifications outside of Canvas and have the reply appear in Conversations. However, please be aware that attachments added as part of an external reply are not included with the message shown in the Canvas Inbox.
You and your student should be able to find student assignments, grades and resources for each course in Canvas.
Please note: Elementary grades are entered into FACTS (not Canvas) and , beginning in 4th grade, grades become visible to parents through their FACTS parent portal.
If you want to take a quick glance at class grades from Canvas, when you login click "View Grades" on the right side. This should give you an overview of each class for the term. If you see a class that you want to investigate further, click on the class name to see all assignments and grades.
Yes! You can use the Canvas inbox to send messages to teachers that are assigned to your student. The Canvas inbox is restricted to only Canvas accounts, so teachers, students, and parents will only find school related messages within their inbox. This will clean up communication between all parties as messages will not be lost in emails or misspelled addresses. As an observer, parents will only have access to message their student and the teacher. To see how to utilize the Canvas inbox feature, check out the following guides, “How do I send messages to a user in a course as a Student?” ** and “What is the Inbox?”
**Although this article is written towards the students, it can still apply to observer accounts.
Yes! The Canvas Parent app can be found on Apple’s App Store or Google Play. Many parents are commenting on how much easier is to browse their students' grades from the app. For more information, check out this article, “What is the Canvas Parent App?”
For those observing multiple students: this is the best way to sort by student.
Please contact your child's homeroom teacher with any questions.
