Denver Christian Middle School is committed to ensuring that each student is placed in a math class that best fits their academic abilities and work habits. Our goal is to provide an environment that challenges students while supporting their growth and love for Math. The placement process for math classes involves a comprehensive evaluation of each student's performance on standardized tests, work habits, and an entrance exam.
We utilize Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test scores as a primary criterion for math class placement. The MAP test helps us understand each student's current mathematical proficiency. Generally speaking, the scores below help us to place students into the appropriate Math class. Please keep in mind that these scores guide our conversation and process, but it is not the only factor we consider. Again, we take into account the student's work habits, desire to move up, etc.
6th Grade Math: All incoming 6th graders are initially considered for this level.
7th Grade Math: Requires a MAP score of 235 or higher.
Prealgebra: Requires a MAP score of 245 or higher.
Algebra: Requires a MAP score of 255 or higher.
7th Grade Math: Default placement for 7th graders.
Prealgebra: Requires a MAP score of 235 or higher.
Prealgebra: Standard placement for 8th graders.
Algebra I: Requires a MAP score of 245 or higher.
In addition to MAP scores, Denver Christian Middle School considers a student's work habits in the placement process. Important factors include:
Ability to Advocate for Themselves: Students should be able to seek help when needed and effectively communicate their understanding or confusion regarding the material.
Independence: The ability to work independently is crucial. Students should demonstrate the capability to tackle problems on their own before seeking assistance.
Assignment Completion: Timely and consistent assignment completion is a key indicator of a student's readiness for more challenging material. Students must demonstrate a track record of completing all assignments on time.
Entrance Test (for those students who are new to DCS)
Finally, an entrance test is administered to provide an additional measure of a student's mathematical abilities. This test is designed to assess skills critical for success in the upcoming math course and ensures that students are placed in a class where they can thrive and be challenged appropriately.
This comprehensive approach to math class placement at Denver Christian Middle School, which considers MAP test scores, work habits, and, if applicable, an entrance test, ensures that every student is set up for success at the next level.
