September Counseling Lesson
The DMUSD Counselors are excited to kick off monthly Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons in every classroom! These lessons align with district-wide initiatives and are designed to create consistency and connection across schools. Each month, our lessons will integrate key frameworks: CASEL, Second Step, and the Portrait of a Learner (POL).
This month’s focus:
CASEL: Self-Efficacy
Second Step: Growth Mindset & Goal Setting
Portrait of a Learner: Learner’s Mindset
These topics help students build confidence in their abilities, learn from challenges, and set meaningful goals.
Grown Up Tips for Home:
Celebrate effort. Praise your child for trying something new or sticking with a challenge—not just for getting it “right.”
Set small goals together. Whether it's reading a book, cleaning a room, or learning a new skill, help your child break it into steps and celebrate progress.
Model a growth mindset. Talk about a time you made a mistake and what you learned from it. Let your child see that adults grow, too!
Use “yet” language. If your child says, “I can’t do it,” encourage them to say, “I can’t do it yet.”
Coping Strategy of the Month
Flower-Candle Breathing Exercise
Imagine you're holding a beautiful bouquet of flowers in one hand and a cupcake with a candle in the other hand.
Take a big deep breath and smell the flowers.
Slowly blow the air out and imagine you are blowing out the candle.
Repeat three times!
