Throughout the course of the
day, conflict may arise. For our
students, it is crucial that we
teach them skills to resolve
these conflicts independently.
Through our Second Steps
program, students learn the
STEPS to problem solving.
Students may have difficulty
thinking of productive, safe
solutions to the problems they
encounter and are provided
with this problem solving wheel
to support the process:
If the problem persists after
attempting these STEPS, they
are encouraged to report to an
adult for additional support.
They do this verbally to their
teacher/staff/campus
aide/school counselor or by
completing a help slip
requesting to speak with their
school counselor.
Growing Global Citizens
This month, students will learn how to recognize their feelings and use tools and strategies to manage strong emotions in healthy ways. We'll be introducing the Zones of Regulation to help students build awareness of their emotional states and explore some coping strategies that support self-regulation.
Key SEL Themes:
CASEL: Self-Awareness
Second Step: Emotion Management
Portrait of a Learner: Emotional Integrity
These lessons help students develop emotional awareness, manage big feelings, and build resilience—all important foundations for learning and relationships.
Name the feeling. Help your child build emotional vocabulary by naming what they’re feeling: “You look frustrated. Want to talk about it?”
Practice calming strategies together. Try deep breathing, drawing, taking a walk, or using a calm-down space at home.
Use the Zones of Regulation language. Ask, “What zone are you in?” and “What tool could help you get back to the green zone?”
Normalize all feelings. Let your child know it’s okay to feel mad, sad, or worried—and that there are healthy ways to work through those feelings.

How to use: This strategy is used as a form of communication for students to advocate for themselves and others. They can do this by using this sentence frame:
I feel__________ when________ please___________.
Example: I feel sad when you call me names please use kind words.
