The DMUSD Counseling Team is beyond excited to have launched grade-level assemblies during the 2022-2023 school year and continue facilitating them for our students during the 2023-2024 school year. These assemblies help us to connect with every single student in an assembly setting each trimester (totaling 3x/year). The success of this work is dependent on the school-to-home connection. Please review the information sent from your student's teacher/the school relating to these assemblies so the conversation can be continued at home. The topics range based on data, teacher report and student need and cover the following information:
Kindergarten
1st Grade
Trimester #1: Zones of Regulation + Expected vs. Unexpected
Trimester #2: Tattling versus Reporting
Trimester #3: Flexible Thinking
2nd Grade
Trimester #1: Zones of Regulation + Size of the Problem
Trimester #2: Self-Control
Trimester #3: Thinking bubble vs Talking bubble
3rd Grade
Trimester #1: Zones of Regulation + Toolbox (coping strategies)
Trimester #2: How our Emotions Affect our Communication
Trimester #3: Teamwork
4th Grade

The Zones of Regulation is like a map for our feelings and energy levels! The four zones help us identify, understand and manage our emotions.
Within Zones of Regulation, students will learn about size of the problem. This is an important skill because we want to ensure that the size of our problem matches the size of our reaction.
What is a calm down corner?
A calm down corner is a place for children to pause, reset and regulate.
When might you use a calm down corner?
when your child is experiencing a big emotion
when your child is overstimulated
when your child is not listening
when your child needs a break from screen time
when your child is transitioning from a high energy activity to a calmer activity that requires more focus
Note: A calm down corner is a peaceful place to reset and should not be used as a punishment.
