Standardized tests can be anxiety-inducing for many students. There can be a build-up of pressure surrounding these assessments. In alignment with mental health awareness month, the calming strategies listed can help kids not only with test anxiety, but also handling any uncomfortable situation. Always remind your kids that they are not defined by the test!
While we can't control the test content, we can control what we do to help ourselves be prepared - organizing our materials, going to bed early, eating a healthy breakfast and practicing affirmations.
A lot of worry can stem from the mystery surrounding the test. Ask them to review the information they covered in class - format of the questions and the testing environment (their classroom).
Teach kids to recognize those worry thoughts and how they are affected by them through catch, check, change! Catch those thoughts and then change them to more realistic and positive thoughts. Check worries with questions like: Is this a fact? Do I have any other evidence? What about last time? How is this different? What feeling is this thought giving me?
