The Power Of Blessing
Foundational Understandings
What Does It Mean to BLESS Someone?
To BLESS is to want and will good to another person and to speak it forth before the presence of God for His backing-power to enact it.
To bless someone is to treat others in accordance to the Golden Rule: "Treat others as you would want them to treat you..." - Matthew 7:12 CEV. So in essence, when we know a person's struggle, pain, challenges, and frustrations, we can imagine even from our experience and the experiences of others we have seen throughout the years, what might be helpful—for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.
To bless someone is to partner with God in what He already loves to do. It is always God’s will for you to bless others.
Your blessing is only true and powerful if it is consistent with God’s Word. When you prepare to bless others, pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you, and let the Word of God undergird everything you say.
When you bless someone, let your first thought be, How can my blessing help this person become more secure in God’s love and mine?
We make powerful and effective blessings God wants to answer when they are informed and empowered by Scripture, inspired by Holy Spirit and guided by the Biblical vision of the the abundant life God has for the person.
When you bless someone you help them envision a fruitful future. When you point others to a positive future, you activate hope in their souls.
When you bless someone you affirm the unmerited favor of God on their lives.
A blessing prayer is a prayer of faith on behalf of others to a good God we have come to know, love and trust. We bless others because we trust in His goodness and in His benevolent heart.
It is most powerful to bless someone out of things that are revealed to you by God. Since God speaks to His people—a God given blessing the children of God have access to—we can employ what we saw, heard, or sensed, and work it in or formulate it into a blessing. Blessings that are formed around a divine revelation become confident blessings you can speak over people. Seek the Lord for revelation over the person and then formulate a blessing from it.
As you can probably see from this webpage, blessings are formed by using your natural senses (what you see, hear, sense, etc.), your spiritual senses (tuning into divine revelation) and the Bible (Bible verses which can come from your own Bible knowledge or through divine revelation). Either one or all three can be employed to formulate a blessing. But I do encourage you to challenge yourself to use all three when blessing someone.
A type of blessing that is spoken from God to us is called a "Benediction" and these are spoken in church services as a blessing to the people. > Biblical Benedictions

To Formulate An Appropriate Blessing To A Person, You May Want To Identify These First:
ROLES - Identify the various roles they play in life and speak blessing into them. A man might be a husband, a father, a businessman, etc. I can use these categories to bless that. "As a husband I bless you with a greater and deeper love for your wife..." "I bless the relationship with your kids and ask the Lord to really bind you all together in love and care for one another. May you have many moments of connecting and enjoying activities with each others that bind you closer..."
STRUGGLES - Find out where there's a struggle and speak blessing into it. It could be in the area of physical pain, relational strife with a loved one, or a lingering frustration with work. And so I can bless the person with what would be most helpful, satisfying and God-honoring, in that context. The struggle can be physical, mental, emotional, social-relational or spiritual in nature. If it's digestive problems, I can bless this way, "I bless your digestive system with health and well-being..." If it's a lack of community I can bless them this way, "I bless you to experience a pure family feel in a community that richly cares for each other and supports one another."
QUALITIES LACKING FOR TRUE SPIRITUAL MATURITY - Allow God's Word to inform the desired spiritual maturity and the godly outcome they need for His abundant life to thrive in them, then speak these as a blessing over them. If a person struggles with negative qualities, thinking, emotions, or feelings, like anger or frustration, I may speak the opposite over them as a blessing. "Lord fill Carlos with your peace and contentment in You and give him a sound mind to think and see things as You see things."
Examples of a Contemporary Blessing
"As a husband I bless you with a greater and deeper love for your wife. May she feel the genuineness of your care for her and may she notice all your efforts and choices that you make to be a blessing to her."
"I bless you to experience a pure family feel in a loving community that richly cares for each other and supports one another. May you feel joy every time you partake of this spiritual family."
“I bless you Michael to embrace a long-suffering patience in relationships and in God’s timing.”
“I bless you Carol with a deep sense of calling and identity, that has been formed by God Himself. May you experience a confident hope and a joy-filled sense of living in God's purpose for your life.”
“ Sammie, I bless you with restored relationships in your family. May each family member experience His healing, grace and help to walk in a manner worthy of Christ.”
"I bless your work environment with the peace of God to saturate every room, every person and every interaction that happens there."

Now, this is the goal: to live in harmony with one another and demonstrate affectionate love, sympathy, and kindness toward other believers. Let humility describe who you are as you dearly love one another. Never retaliate when someone treats you wrongly, nor insult those who insult you, but instead, respond by speaking a blessing over them—because a blessing is what God promised to give you. - 1 Peter 3:8-9 TPT
But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. - Luke 6:27-28 NTV
