Covid-19
If your child exhibits COVID-19-like symptoms, he or she will be transported to an isolation room. The School Nurse will promptly notify you about your child, and with your permission, your child will be tested with a rapid antigen test.
Head Lice
Should your child be found to have some live head lice we will ask parents to take their child home and remain absent from school until the condition is treated. If eggs are found, parents will also be informed and asked to treat their child with medication.
Communications relating to Health and Medical matters
The School Nurses are available in school and can be contacted by telephone or email at nurse@dbsbangkok.ac.th. Please do not hesitate to contact them with any medical enquiries you may have regarding your child. They will also be involved in delivering health education to the children in school.
The school must be informed if you give your child medication prior to the start of the school day e.g. Paracetamol given to reduce a temperature.
Regular Medication
If your child has to take regular medication e.g. inhalers, epipen, etc, the medication should be clearly labelled with your child’s name and taken directly to the nurse. A letter with precise instructions detailing the dosage and time to be taken should also be given. A Consent Form giving parental authorisation should be signed prior to this. In some cases, it might be necessary to seek records from previous clinics prior to a child commencing school. No child should be self-medicating at school and this includes vitamins.
Medical History
Parents are expected to ensure that children are up to date with all medical vaccinations and that all relevant medical information is shared with school.
If your child is unwell at school
If your child becomes unwell in class, he/she will be taken to the Medical Centre where the nurse will assess your child. If your child is well enough to stay in school, he/she will be cared for by the nurse and will return to their lessons as soon as possible. Any child with a temperature over 37.5 degrees will be sent home from school.
Otherwise, the nurse will contact you if your child needs to be collected from school.
Accidents and Emergencies
In the unlikely event of an accident, your child will be taken to the nearest appropriate hospital. Usually this will be the World Medical Hospital. Your child will be accompanied to the hospital by one member of staff and the School driver.
The School Nurse will call the parents immediately once a decision to take a child to hospital has been made. During this call, it is likely that the School Nurse will only be able to advise about the initial diagnosis and extent of the injury. They are unlikely to be able to provide you with full details about the accident which will be investigated immediately by a senior member of staff.
The senior member of staff will provide parents with details about the accident as quickly as possible and once the full circumstances have been investigated and understood.
The School will arrange to send a representative to visit your child in hospital by arrangement with you.
A consent form must be signed when your child begins school to give your permission for this to happen.
Diarrhoea and Vomiting
Any child who vomits at school will be sent home to limit the risk of cross infection. Please do not allow your child to return to school for a minimum of 24 hours after their last episode if they are otherwise well and eating and drinking normally. Younger pupils and those that have had symptoms for a few days should remain off school for 48 hours following their last episode.
Highly contagious diseases
Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) and Covid-19
Please note the following procedures that are in line with the Thai Ministry of Health’s policy:
Where there is one confirmed case of HFMD and Covid- 19, the child will be isolated from the class in the Medical Centre and sent home. They must remain at home for 7 days. The classroom of the affected child will be deep cleaned.
Where there are two confirmed cases of HFMD and Covid- 19, the second child will be isolated from the class in the Medical Centre and sent home. They must remain at home for 7 days for HFM and 5 days for Covid-19. The classroom of the affected child will be deep cleaned whilst an alternative classroom will be used for teaching.
Where there are three confirmed cases of HFMD and Covid- 19 in the same class, the class will be closed and all children must remain at home for 7 days and 5 days as mentioned above.
The above policy repeats should the HFMD and Covid-19 spread across one class.
Covid-19
The infected student may return after home isolation for 5 days or tested negative on an ATK test which comes earlier.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
There is no specific treatment for RSV. Generally, systematic treatment is provided, including medication to relieve a phlegmy cough, medication to keep airways open, medication to reduce fever, and a nebulized bronchodilator. Children are typically contagious for 3 to 8 days. A child can return to school when he/she is fever, cough and runny nose free for 24 hours without fever reducers (such as Paracetamol) and no longer have symptoms.
Where there is one confirmed case of RSV, the child will be isolated from the class in the Medical Centre and sent home.
Where there are three confirmed cases of RSV, the class may be closed until further notice.
Documentation
All parents are required to complete the school’s Medical History Form before their child starts school. This must be signed and given to the School Nurse. The documentation is a legal requirement giving permission for the School to act in the best interests for your child. The prompt return of Medical History Form is a requirement of the school. Children without adequate immunisations may be asked to stay at home until the immunisations have been completed and are effective.
