Have a valid passport
Ensure your passport is valid at least 3 months (we recommend 6 months) past the program end date. If it is not, plan to renew ASAP.ย
Obtain a visa if necessary
It is your responsibility to determine if you need a visa and obtain one if necessary.ย
Note: Some destinations do not require a visa, but can instead require entry registration or a residency permit.ย
For more information, review our webpage for Passports and Visas.
Familiarize yourself with your program's budget sheet
Budget sheets contain information on known and estimated costs of your program and other program specific information.
Be Safe
It is each student's responsibility to keep themselves safe during the program and to evaluate health and personal needs before and during time away.
Review and complete program materials on time
Complete Program Partner requirements
Program partners and host institutions will contact students about their requirements. You must complete their requirements to remain eligible for the program.ย
Review this handbook
Complete all the pre-arrival orientation session requirements.
Review Travel Guidanceย
The Guarini Institute will email students Travel Guidance.
The guidance can include the program dates, information about arrival time and location, budget and entry requirements, and other important travel information. DO NOT book plane tickets until you receive this information.
Review the Program Guideย
Exchange programs: Brief program guides are available after students are accepted to their program.
Faculty-directed programs: Detailed program guides are available ~4 weeks before the program begins.
The Guarini Institute and our partners support students as they prepare for and participate in study away programs.
The Guarini Institute provides leadership and direction for the Collegeโs study away programs.ย
We will primarily communicate with you to your Dartmouth email address. You are always welcome to email or call us, or visit us in person at our office.
SAMs are undergraduate students who have studied away on a Guarini Institute program and are available to talk with you about your questions and concerns regarding all things study away.ย
A SAM will be assigned to your program cohort the term preceding your term away. They serve as panelists during the live pre-arrival orientation session. SAMs conduct email outreach to your cohort so you will have ample opportunity to communicate and meet with them throughout the term preceding time off-campus. All SAMs are available to chat with you and answer your questions.
Faculty Directors provide the academic, intercultural, and administrative leadership that enables the program to succeed. While off-campus programs vary in format,ย
Faculty Directors usually teach one course and supervise the overall program curriculum. They coordinate with local faculty and staff on program academics.
In addition to their teaching role, they supervise and direct students in the academic and intercultural goals of the program both before departure and during the program.ย
They are also responsible for the supervision and welfare of the participants in the program.ย
Exchange partners accept students that enroll directly and take classes at their institution. The exchange institution's staff are the primary contacts for students during onboarding and the duration of their program.
Partners are carefully selected and provide a variety of customized support services including a comprehensive orientation, support for program logistics and payments, and assistance with participant health, safety, and security matters.ย
Our partners are often headquartered in the US while having trained staff that support study away programs year-round at the program location.ย
The Guarini Institute continuously improves program design and academic quality in coordination with program partners.ย
The Guarini Institute will introduce you to your program partner.
The Guarini exchange coordinator provides information about the exchange institution and can help to act as liaison between you and your host institution. Contact the exchange coordinator, Noelle Warinsky, if you have questions.
All courses you take during your Guarini Intitute faculty-directed program will contribute to your GPA (Grade Point Average).
Students on term-length faculty-directed programs will be assigned a 3-course load and will receive specific course credits and grades. The Registrar's office in coordination with the relevant department will register students directly for the courses on the program.
Students on fall term + programs will be assigned 1 course for the duration of their program, in addition to three courses during the fall term.
Students must obtain transfer credit approval to get credit for all courses taken during an off-campus term. To obtain approval, please complete the Transfer Credit Approval Process as managed by the Registrarโs Office.
