Billable expenses are fixed.
These costs will be billed to your student account at Dartmouth and usually only include tuition, fees, and living expenses (housing and food).
For students receiving aid, these costs are covered the same as for an on-campus term.
Non-Billable expenses are variable.
These include average amounts students spend which can increase or decrease according to your lifestyle. Inflation may also change costs from the time of the last budget update and are the best estimates at the last time of update.
Non-billable cost estimates allow students to determine how much money to bring on program. More information about non-billable items is explained in more detail in the NOTES section below the budget numbers.
Living expenses generally include the cost of:
housing,
meals included as part of the program (if applicable), and
a local transportation pass.
Each program is different and information about what is included is specified in more detail in the NOTES section below the budget numbers.
Transportation cost estimate includes:
Ground transportation from Dartmouth to Boston and back (approximately $400 as of August 2024), and
Airfare: a round-trip flight (including taxes and fees) with no change fee.
Flight estimates are provided by the College’s travel agents at TravelLeaders and include taxes, fees, and ground transportation from Dartmouth. Students are responsible for travel to and from the airport in their host city unless otherwise specified in the Travel Guidance for Faculty-Directed Programs. See the NOTES section below for details on the budget numbers.
Standard fees set by the College which includes:
the General Services Fee and
the Health Services Fee.
Average estimate for food or meals (purchased or self-prepared) that are not already included in the billable living expenses.
For students on faculty-directed programs, this also includes a budget for meals purchased on excursions.
Tuition for one term (or full year, as specified) during the academic year.
Estimated cost of housing for the program if not already included in the program's Living Expenses budget item.
See the NOTES section below the budget numbers for more details on housing.
Other costs billed by Dartmouth College as specified in the NOTES section below the budget numbers.
Based on Dartmouth Financial Aid estimate for an average Dartmouth term.
This category includes the cost of applying for a visa as a USA passport-holding student. In most cases, USA passport-holding students won't need a visa.
Fees may vary for students holding other country citizenship status and are not calculated in the budget; visa fees can be taken from the Miscellaneous funds item.
To learn more about visas and to check if your program location requires you to get a Visa, visit our webpage for Passports and Visas.
Miscellaneous expenses are lumped to include:
personal spending money (entertainment, shopping),
out-of-pocket expenses,
extra food or snacks/meals out,
international SIMs or phone plans,
non-program-related local traveling/transportation, and
other program-specific needs as applicable (i.e. local transportation costs). If local transportation costs are not included in the program's living expenses, this category also contains the estimated cost to allocate for these expenses.
See the Miscellaneous line in the NOTES section below the budget numbers for details.
Program-specific field costs paid by the student out-of-pocket such as:
gear/equipment,
program-specific clothing/boots, and
healthcare costs not covered by insurance (i.e. vaccines or tests needed for entry)
More details are specified in the NOTES section below the budget numbers.
