Each travelling student has 2 years to fundraise their place on the expedition from point of sign up. The fundraising is a huge part of the learning process, with students learning how to work together to earn their experience and not to be just gifted it. We have seen such huge personal growth and development in our young people during this process which sets them up well for the expedition itself.

Whilst in Kenya, all our students will be participating in the 'Transformational Leadership Model', which will provide them with the appropriate skills to lead others with empathy and confidence to gain desired outcomes for the team.

We have 19 students involved in our expedition team for July/August 2024 and they are all very busy fundraising and getting prepared for their African adventure in the summer 2024. The team will be supported by our Head of Expeditions, Miss Hayley Wood-Thompson & Head of Year 10, Mr Ben Creasey.

Project Work

Throughout our time in Kenya our students will get involved in a range of projects, helping to support education and community development in two rural communities. They will become part of the community as they live and work alongside local people, learning about the challenges faced by local people as well as the rich tradition and culture of Kenya. Throughout the expedition, they will get up close to some truly incredible wildlife – notably some of the Big 5 on land - and scuba dive alongside colourful marine life as they undertake their PADI Open Water Scuba Diving qualification in the glistening Indian Ocean.

School improvement and conservation work

Many local schools are situated in very dilapidated buildings which suffer from erosion and seasonal flooding. Our students will help to build or renovate school buildings so that local children have a clean and safe academic environment. They will also get involved in initiatives to promote a peaceful co-existence between the community and the local wildlife, such as improving natural waterholes and planting indigenous trees for habitat and food sources.

Community development and coastal forest protection

Muhaka village remains one of the poorest communities in Kenya. Our students will help to support community development projects such as traditional house building and school improvements. They may also work on reforestation projects within the sacred Kaya forest, an important habitat home to many species of monkeys.
