16 February 2024

As our colleagues and students look forward to a well-deserved half-term break, this newsletter will focus very particularly on those of our students who have shown ‘above and beyond’ performance since the start of the new year, whether this be in terms of academic endeavour and performance or in commitment, engagement and character.

As such, I am delighted to be able to announce the names of 73 students from across our school community who have been nominated by their teachers for a Headteacher Commendation and accompanying Reward Points. You will find their names and the qualities they have been nominated for under Headteacher Commendations further on in this newsletter. I am also pleased to share the news that this half-term 218 students across Years 7 to 11 received a 100% attendance letter and a further 171 students were in receipt of a 'No Behaviour Points' letter.  Such commitment to their school and their own education is quite simply excellent.

It also gives me enormous pleasure to announce the winner of our ‘Name the Canteen’ competition opened to all students in the latter part of January 2024. As we are now officially part of Danes Educational Trust, there will be a refurbishment of the main school canteen over the course of half-term. Students have already benefited from a much broader and healthier range of food and drink items over the course of the past 5 weeks and feedback suggests they are appreciative of this. Below you will see images of the updated frontage (including 3 new hot display units) for the canteen which references both our House Colours and the central image in our school logo - the oak tree, symbol of longevity, stability and strength.

Having received a number of very varied suggestions for the new name, the winning entry is ‘The Wheel’ and bears reference to the St Catherine’s Wheel, like the oak tree included within our school logo.

A very specific mention should be made to Mr Starling’s form who, undoubtedly knowing that their Headteacher is also a Teacher of English, offered up the following very literary choices: ‘Lord of the Onion Rings’; ‘Lord of the Fries’ and ‘Gone with the Wings’. Thank you to all students who took part in the competition. You gave Ms Bertolone, Ms Haddock and I much joy with your humour on 6 February when the entries came in!

Finally, I would like to say thank you to all parents and our Year 9,  11 and Year 13 students who attended the Pathways, Options and Parents’ Evening events at the school over the last 4 weeks. We had over 70% attendance from all year groups at each event and it was lovely for our colleagues to hear the positive feedback that was kindly offered by numerous of you.

Recent data indicates that the Year 11 ‘Prepped for Success’ Programme is yielding the impact we wish for with a 12.2% increase in students who are now on track to achieve their target grades since the start of January 2024. Please continue to encourage your child(ren) to attend the various sessions that are on offer and to use the half-term to plan for and engage with a careful revision / consolidation programme leading up to the main exams that begin at the start of May. Further on in this newsletter, you will find images of the excellent practical work completed by our Year 11 Food Science students over the last 2 weeks as part of their GCSE. Their ongoing commitment to their study in this subject area has been humbling.

Similarly and with regard to Year 13, congratulations go to those students who have applied through UCAS for university places from September 2024. 66% of the cohort (the highest % of applications submitted in the last 10 years) have applied to study a variety of courses at a range of universities with 26 applying to at least one Russell Group university.  84% have applied to at least one high tariff university with the most common courses applied for being Business, Economics, Law / Criminology, Psychology and Architecture.

On this very positive note, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and restful half-term. Thank you, as ever, for your ongoing support as we seek to make The John Warner School the school of choice for Hoddesdon and beyond once more.

Warmest Regards

Rachel Brindley

Danes Educational Trust Law Day @Hertfordshire University 25 January 2024

On Thursday 25 January, 10 lucky students from The John Warner School attended The University of Hertfordshire Law School to spend the day hearing from Solicitors, Lawyers, Law Students & Barristers on all things Law-related. Our students learned about routes into the field, methods of study and how to stand out from the crowd in UCAS applications.

The highlight of the day came in the afternoon, when the students entered a mock courtroom and took up positions on the defence and prosecution in a trial. Our students represented the school brilliantly and enjoyed getting to know students from the other schools within Danes Educational Trust.

Congratulations to Keira Burdett-Coutts and Aisha Njie, two stand out students on the day who really blew us away with their knowledge and questioning. A great experience was had by all. Our thanks go to Chancellor’s School colleagues who had arranged the day for Danes Educational Trust and the University of Hertfordshire for hosting.

Holocaust Memorial Service January 2024

It was a privilege for The John Warner School to have been invited to the Holocaust Memorial  Ceremony on 26 January 2024. We joined groups of students from other local secondary and primary schools at Lowewood Museum Gardens where one of only 2 memorial stones within Hertfordshire is placed.  Alongside various members of the community, including the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, we shared stories, poetry, the Kaddish and music with a final laying of shoes by the memorial stone.

Community efforts such as this are vital in educating people about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance to other mass genocides that have occurred since. The ceremony was a respectful and informative way to commemorate those who have lost their lives. The releasing of the doves was especially beautiful and memorialised the theme, ‘Fragility of Freedom’. We were particularly proud of Year 13 student, Annabelle O’Bryan who read a poem of her own composing, entitled ‘One Little Shoe’.

Year 11 Food Examination

Our Year 11 students have been busy whipping up some delicious creations for their exams. It has been exciting to see their passion for food ignite as they continue to strive for culinary excellence.  They will be continuing their journey towards GCSE success in this field of study after half-term.

Djembe Music Workshop

Our Year 10 students enjoyed a djembe workshop during the first week of February 2024, learning about African drumming with a focus on the djembe drums from Sub-Saharan West Africa. As part of their music GCSE, Year 10 were given the opportunity to perform together using instruments from 'Rhythms of the World'. This is a broad area of study that includes Samba, Calypso, Indian Classical Music, Bhangra and more! After learning the different playing techniques, students put together a performance using rhythmic ostinatos and a polyrhythmic texture.

They are now in the process of consolidating their learning by researching melodic instruments of West Africa before moving on to Music of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Headteacher Commendations: Spring Term 1, 2024

Thank yous

Good morning

Thank you so much for your email. I didn't want to attend parents’ evening…(but)...She is working very hard to try and catch up and I'm so proud of her. So it's so lovely to hear someone is seeing her progress and appreciating it. Thank you for the positive feedback.

Kind Regards

Ammie Cockman

Good afternoon Mrs Brindley,

I just wanted to drop you a quick email to congratulate yourself and the staff on a very positive and productive parents’ evening last night.

I had concerns about how it would work based on the one and only parents’ evening we had previously attended in person, but am pleased to say it was a complete contrast to that experience!

I found most of the teachers to be well prepared, well informed and with a clear plan of what was needed to optimise Owen’s GCSE grades.  As always, Mr Starling deserves a special mention as not only does he fully explain where Owen is with his coursework and what he can do to further improve his work, but he also has a clear, structured plan of the coming months and gives detailed help in which areas Owen should be focusing on (This was also evident with Owens D.T and Maths teacher too).

I also found the atmosphere to be one of positivity, with a huge change of ethos clearly apparent - well done to yourself and your team.

Have a great weekend,

Best regards,

Denise
