10 November 2023

Dear Parent / Carer

Today our school held its first Remembrance Service in 5 years.  We bravely took the decision to challenge the recent weather and to include our entire school community in a service within the central quadrangles. The event involved a march by from our Combined Cadet Force, a laying of wreaths, the reading of a poem by members of our 6th form Head Team and, most impressively, a beautiful rendition of The Last Post by Matthew Hill in Year 10 who possesses a Grade 7 Distinction in the playing of the cornet.

The event was preceded by bespoke activity in forms encouraging our students to reflect upon why the ceremony of Remembrance is so important and to consider its particular relevance to very recent events globally.

I can only say how proud I am of over 1,000 students and colleagues who conducted themselves throughout with appropriate respect, attention and care. I would also like to thank Mr Cove, Assistant Headteacher and Director of Post-16, for his organisation of the event, and the Humanities Faculty for providing the in-form activity that preceded the service.

It has also been my absolute delight to award a number of students with Headteacher’s Commendations since the new Reward System was introduced at the start of this second Autumn half-term.

Commendations have been given to the following students from Year 8 for their wonderful waterfall models and cakes made as part of Home Learning in Geography and seen in the pictures below - Natalia, Lydia, Izzie, Ellie, Charlotte, Abigail, Darby and Ella. Of particular note when I met and spoke with the girls was Natalia’s response to the learning involved - ‘I knew wax would work for the water because of the nature of the substance.’.

Equally impressive is the engagement of our Year 9 girls in their first gymnastics lesson last week. Ms Haddock was kind enough to share the following photographs of the girls who wanted to show me the skills they had been working on and which have led to the creation of a resource card for other Year 9 classes to use in their lessons over the next few weeks. Excellent collaborative learning all round.

Finally, I would like to thank all the Year 11s and their parents who engaged with our Post-16 Open Evening on Tuesday this week when we welcomed over 450 visitors to our school. (Please see the lovely and moving account of her sixth form journey by Lucy Mills, 2023 Alumni, within this newsletter.) I know that Ms Thomas, Assistant Headteacher for KS4, Ms Stephenson, Head of Year, and Mr Fox, Director of Learning, have been very pleased with the behaviour and attitude of the significant majority of the 215 students within our Year 11 cohort. As such, I have chosen to open up The Bridge for them at lunchtime for a trial period. The Bridge provides students with both a cafe service and an opportunity to sit in an open inside space while eating their lunch.

Warmest Regards

Rachel Brindley
Interim Headteacher, The John Warner School

Holland Sports Tour, 2023

October half-term saw 39 students and 5 staff from The John Warner School travel to Valkenberg in Holland for a week of football coaching, matches & activities. The teams travelling included the U13 boys, the U14 boys and a small group of U15 girls.

Mornings started with a training session, where the students worked on a range of individual skills, set pieces, unit play and whole team tactics. The afternoons were activity based and included swimming, laser tag and 'bounce'.

Ironman World Champion

It is also with delight that Ms Bertolone, as Lucy Charles-Barclay’s Year 8 Form Tutor when she attended The John Warner School, would like to inform our current parents that one of our past students has finally made it to top spot.

Lucy crossed the line in Hawaii to become Ironman world champion on Sunday 29 October. Lucy  set a course record of eight hours 24 minutes 31 seconds, her time being 1 minute 47 seconds faster than the previous record set by five-time winner Daniela Ryf of Switzerland in 2018.  Lucy also became the first woman to lead the event from start to finish. With many congratulations to Lucy.

Rhythm Workshop

Our Year 10 Music GCSE students took part in a rhythm workshop on Thursday 2 November at Chancellor's School in Brookmans Park.

Our students played African Djembe drums, Calypso steel pans and Brazilian Samba drums. They were able to mix with students from Chancellor's and share their knowledge of the OCR Area of Study 3 - Rhythms of the World.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience the instruments and playing techniques first hand and they are very excited to continue their learning back in the classroom.

Inter-Primary Cup

We were delighted to welcome 7 local  junior schools to our school site on Friday 3 November. Year 5 and 6 students took part in the annual inter-primary cup and over 25 teams (170+ children) competed in round robin football and netball tournaments during the morning.

There were some exceptional performances from a number of teams and a huge amount of talent on display from individual pupils. It was clear, when watching the games, that pupils had been training hard for the competition.

All of the matches were officiated by a number of The John Warner School’s own young officials who give up their time regularly to organise sporting opportunities for younger pupils in our local community and younger students at school.

Winners Football: Sheredes & Wormley
Winners Netball: St Augustines & Cranbourne

John Warner Alumni

The John Warner School has some exceptional stories to tell with regard to members of its school alumni.

With Sixth Form Open Evening approaching Miss Brenton made contact with Lucy Mills, a recent graduate from Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dance. Together they reflecting on her journey through sixth form, including many achievements, from being awarded a D*D*D* and, of course, including her beautiful final solo piece that follows her dreams and ambitions for the future. This may be seen through the link here Lucy Mills - Final Dance

Pre-Christmas focus

As we move towards Christmas, we will provide a small focus piece on Christmas activities in each newsletter up to the end of term:

Yesterday Ms Petengall started an after-school Christmas Club, particularly focusing on Year 7s, but all years are, of course, welcome up to a maximum of 20 students on each occasion.

The club runs on a Thursday from 15.30pm - 17.00pm for 6 weeks starting on Thursday 9 November and running to Thursday 14 December

What will the students be doing...

We are very much looking forwards to the results of our students’ creative baking!

Final Thank you

This newsletter’s thank you comes not from one of our parents but rather our local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), Nick Platt. 3 of our school’s Senior and Pastoral leaders, Ms Jaggs, Mrs Walters and Ms Haddock, walked the roads of Hoddesdon on the night of October 31 - Halloween - in support of our local police officers and PCSOs while also building positive relationships in the community. Ms Walters commented, 'Tonight, I was incredibly proud of our students and how they engaged with us. I know you have spoken previously about students who smile and engage in conversation with staff, this was in abundance tonight and we had the pleasure of having many positive conversations with students, both past and present.’.

Meanwhile, Nick was kind enough to send our colleagues the following thank you:

Good day Miss Jaggs,

Many thanks for you and your colleagues’ help and assistance last night at Chaucer Way, a very positive outcome was the result and the majority of young persons appeared to have a fun time.

So, please pass on our thanks from Herts Police. I hope you enjoyed your evening.

Kind regards,

PCSO Nick Platt, 6057,

Cheshunt.

I am delighted that our students conducted themselves in such an exemplary and positive manner over the course of an evening that can be known for 'mischief'!
