Discrimination itself is a huge issue in many social groups. Learn about how gender can make a huge difference in how one is treated in this opinion article by Anna Walker.
Women's rights should be discussed by everyone at one point in life. Women have felt a distant form of discrimination, which is a serious issue that has been going against women for centuries, although women have made many great leaps in rising to equality. Elizabeth Blackwell, for example, was the first woman to graduate from medical school and the first female doctor in America. In 1848, the first woman's rights convention took place. Many of these accomplishments were a step closer to equal rights for women, but we, as a society, have not reached equality and there is more to be done.

Behaviors shown in society say that equality still needs to be focused on, and even the small changes make a huge difference in women's lives. From pay rates to simple respect, society has made it clear that being a woman has many disadvantages. Over the years, women have fought for equal rights, but has it truly gotten to the point where we can really call it equal? According to The Reader's Digest, women earn 82 cents for every dollar a man makes. Women, although they do the same work, get paid less than men. Why is it that people are treated as less because of who they are? What convinced the world that women are weak? Small statements like, “You throw like a girl,” "You run like a girl," or "Don't cry like a girl" are specifically directed at people as insults. Being a girl or being like a girl is not and never should be used as an insult towards anyone. Saying these sexist statements only normalizes the idea that women are lower or weaker than men.
Pink tax is known as the extra money that is charged for female products. Pink tax can be found on everything from clothes to kids' toys. Just because a product is pink or has a slightly different design, it may be more expensive. According to VOA News, “Overall, women’s products cost 7% more than similar products for men, women pay more than men for comparable personal care products 56% of the time." Women have been told throughout their entire lives that they need feminine products, and companies know that they get paid more because of this. If everyone stopped buying gender-specific products, then companies would be forced to stop charging more for their products.
The discrimination is not just centered around money and insults, but also physical attacks and fear. According to the Daily News, “Half of women greatly feared a physical attack. Only 34% of men expressed the same fear.” Being in public, in general, is a fear for many women. In most circumstances, women fear going out at night, even in their own yards. Women fear being alone and out in the open. Something like being alone is feared. The Daily News also states, “When walking alone, 58.4% all women feel much safer when holding keys between their fingers — a common safety precaution that can be used to defend oneself against an attacker.” From strange looks to physical attacks, all of which are scary, create a fear of being in public. Australian Institute of Criminology states, "Women are 11.5 times more likely than men to be killed by a stranger.” This fact, shown in The Feed, proves that women are targeted more than men.
Discrimination against women is still an issue today. From higher prices on anything to going fearfully into public places, being a woman has consistent disadvantages. This is all because a person's gender or identity, which is something that no one can control, is used against women.
